TO ASSAULT SANTIAGO It appears that General Shafter has determined to assault Santiago without with-out waiting for reinforcements This seems a bold plan but General Shafter is proving himself a bold leader It is known that sonic eight thousand troops with large droves of cattle are on their way to relieve General Linares and will arrive in a day or so Reinforcements Rein-forcements for our own army will also arrive in a few days and both being I reinforced the two armies would be relatively I rel-atively about as strong as now sot so-t that there would really be little advantage advan-tage in waiting for reinforcements before I fore making an assault I It cannot be expected that a place so strongly fortified as Santiago can I be carried by assault without a large loss of life The Spaniards will have 1 to fight or surrender for there can be no falling back from Santiago In I the encounters thus far had they have not stood up like men who would make a desperate death struggle nor is is probable that they have fallen back for the purpose of making a great last I struggle Santiago carried then will follow the entrance of the American squadron into the harbor to receive the surrender surren-der of Cervera1 fleet or to give it battle bat-tle If battle is to be done it will probably be one of the greatest naval fights the world ever witnessed What a time of anxiety and expectation expecta-tion it is
