Show BIG BEEF CONTRACT Swift Co Will Supply the Island of Cuba Washington June Commissary General Gen-eral Egan of the army today awarded to Swift Co of Chicago a contract ford supplying the troops in Cuba with refrigerated re-frigerated beef in such quantities and at such places as may be reQuired The contract involves the shipment to Cuba I I of large cargoes of dressed meat to be used not alone for the soldiers but also I j for the feeding of the reconcentradoes i and Cuban troops The government I j guarantees the contract to last for not I i I less than three months and me beef ito I i-to be furnished so that it will be perfectly i per-fectly good and fit for use 72 hours after i its delivery It is impossible at this time to say just how much beef will be required I re-quired but it is safe to assume that before be-fore the three months are up it will amount to over 100000 pounds a day This is on the basis of 100000 men who will be furnished with a pound and a quarter of beef per day The Intention of the commissary department is to send ships from Tampa every few days which will be made the sailing point to carry enough meat to last the troops until a I fresh consignment arrives For this purpose pur-pose the department has selected two vessels which will be fitted up with re frigerating plants that will preserve the I meat in a fresh and wholesome manner |
