| Show liITT SIS FUR MANILA I 1 H VESSEL WILL MAKE ALL POSSIBLE SPEED Will Not Wait For the Other Transports Trans-ports Fourth Expedition Expected Expect-ed to leave By July 10th San Francisco June 29The speedy steamer Newport bearing Major General Gen-eral Wesley Merritt military governor of the Philippines and his staff besides the Astor light battery and companies H and K of the Third United States I artillery and detachments from the hospital and signal corps is now on its way to Manila As the vessel gradually gradu-ally drew away from her dock the blowing of many whistles told the people peo-ple on shore that General Merritt had taken his departure from American I p shores and was on his way to assume charge of the military affairs of the Philippines Great crowds had gathered to wit ness the departure of the trim vessel and many fashionable equipages on the dock told of the presence of representatives representa-tives of the four hundred who had ccme to bid farewell to friends among members of the Astorbattery Many tug boats and yachts chartered for the occasion accompanied the Newport down the bay and out through the Golden Gate to the Pacific where the last farewells were waved to the departing de-parting military men gathered on the deck of the steamer The Newport will make every effort to overtake the third fleet of transports which sailed on Monday before the fleet reaches Honolulu where the vessels will coal and take on fresh supplies before proceeding to Manila General Merritt is very anxious to avoid an I encounter with any vessel from the Spanish navy and will issue orders to the fleet at Honolulu to make all aos mate I sible seed to the islands I is Drpb able that the Newport will not wait for the other vessels of the fleet at Honolulu Hono-lulu but will proceed wih as little delay de-lay as possible to Manila FOURTH EXPEDITION General E S Otis and his force are doing everything they can to get the fourth expedition under way as soon as possible and to keep up the record which has been made s far of sending i Ian I-an expedition every two weeks Everything Every-thing depends on the transports I Twelve or fifteen more are needed As many ships as ca begotten together without delaying the ext expedition I I will be sent out without regard to a brigade organization specified or organizaton any specifed I number of troops The Pueblo and Peru have already been secured and I i a third transport has been practically decided upon although the army au Ihnritips are not vet vil1intr to eive out I her name officially An attempt will be made to get the expedition away by the 10th of July but if the vessels go in fleet this cannot can-not be done The City of Pueblo is ready and it is reported that tha department de-partment is considering the plan of sending the ships out as fast a they are fitted up Steamship men say that t this is the proper way to do for if Camaras feet passes through the Suez canal a f < et of transports could not be 15 sent from here with safety after July |
