Show WRANGLE I THE HOUSE II Tongues Unsuccessful Attempt t Deliver a Pension Speech Washington May 27he house was this afternoon Inactive for more than I an hour while a roll call was taken and the sergeantatarms was engaged in bringing in absent members to make a I I quorum the absence of which was disclosed dis-closed by the roll call The suspension was caused oy a wrangle growing out I of the attempt of Mr Tongue of Oregon to deliver a general pension speech when the house was considering a private ate pension measure Dalzell of Pennsylvania Penn-sylvania in the chair Mr Richardson Dem Tenn made the point of order that the speech of Mr Tongue was not germane to the pending bill Mr Cannon Rep Ills took Issue with the Tennessee member I The speaker sustained the point of order or-der and Mr Cannon appealed from the decision Upon the motion of Mr Richardson Rich-ardson to table the appeal 87 voted in the affirmative and 1 in the negative Mr Cannon made the point of no quorum quo-rum and a roll call of the house followed fol-lowed It was more than an hour before be-fore the requisite quorum appeared The appeal was then laid upon the table yeas 134 nays 9and consideration considera-tion of private pension bills proceeded With the foregoing exception todays session was without incident When the house met a yeai and nay vote was taken upon the bill undls < posed of when adjournment was taken yesterday to amend the Internal revenue reve-nue law relating t6 bondage and outage periods of distilled spirits The bill passed 132 to 65 Upon motion of Mr Dingley the house agreed to adjourn today to Tuesday Monday being Decoration Day The house passed the bill to pay the heirs of John Roach deceased 28100 for completion of the despatch boat Dolphin The senate resolution authorizing the secretary of the navy to present a sword of honor to Commodore Dewey and cause to be struck bronze medals commemorating the battle of Manila bay and distribute them to the officers and men of the Asiatic squadron was passed unanimously without debate At I p m the house took f recess until S oclock the evening session be devoted to pension legislation |
