Show + THE BRIGADIER GENERALS Yesterday the president sent in quite a number of nominations for brigadier generalships The great majority of I them will strike the country very favorably fa-vorably as they are from the ranks of the regular army which fact is a guarantee guar-antee of fitness Some of the other names are of those who have been In the anny such as Captain Charles A i King the novelist and Colonel Francis Fran-cis V Greene who was for isome years an officer of engineers The names that will attract most attention are those of Colonel Fred D Grant and Harrison Harri-son Gray Otis Colonel Grant is the eldest son of the late General Grant and Is a graduate of West Point He was om Sheridans staff for some years Undoubtedly he owes his nomination to his fathers fame and not to his own merit hut this fact does not mean that he has not military ability In fact he is badly handicapped by the fame of his father the greatest soldier produced by one of the worlds greatest wars That I fame will undoubtedly spur him on to make a name for himself and there is no reason to doubt that he will not rrake as able a brigade commander as the majority of those named for brigadier briga-dier generalship Harrison Gray Otis has a very good military record having fought through the civil war coming out a lieutenant colonel While his record is very good undoubtedly his nomination Isa purely political one He is at present editor and proprietor of the Los Angeles Times His title to fame rests and always al-ways will upon the famous Murchison letter which was sent to Sir Lionel SackvllleWest as a decoy and elicited I from him the reply as to how Anglo American citizens should cast their votes in the presidential election of 188S and which resulted In President Cleveland Cleve-land sending the British minister his passports These nominations seem on their face to be very good ones |
