| Show e < 0 THE ART EXHIBIT < The fifth annual exhibition of painting paint-ing by the Society of Utah Artists is open The development of Utah is not flagging as the splendid display of this year plainly shows and the delighted de-lighted criticisms made by the visitors prove that the enterprise is appreciated and that the art interest of the new state is Increasing + + + To one acquainted with the slow progress of art in Utah and the lack j of encouragement of home talent combined com-bined with the struggles of the artists themselves the exhibit is decidedly a most meritorious one Originality seems to be cropping out continually and inmost in-most of the pictures lofty aims and high ideals combined with painstaking care in matters of detail are worthy of all praise + + + The artists deserve much credit for their display and the society will no doubt manifest a becoming interest by attendance and thus demonstrate the fact that the leaders of fashion while enjoying the pleasures of life are also disposed to lift themselves to the higher plane of arty I art-y + + A picture which attracts much attention at-tention is the Harvest Field in tenton France a symphony In yellow by Evans I was exhibited at the Worlds fair and has since been the property of Mrs John Beck but has never been viewed by the Salt Lake public An i other piece of entirely different treatment treat-ment by the same clever artist is a tropical study called Sunbeams The picture portrays a nook of luxuriant beauty which would be rather somber with its southern vegetation were it not for two straying sunbeams from heavens own blue which filter through the closely clinging branches and forma I form-a relief from the richly colored background back-ground + i + f Charming reproductions of our Utah scenery by Harwood are in evidence on all the walls That he is one of our most conscientious and painstaking artists is clearly shown in all of his works His most conspicuous effort Shores of Great Salt Lake presents an artistic mingling of sparkling water rugged rocks and the mountain grandeur His fruit subjects command much attention and show a delicacy of i touch which characterizes all of Mr Harwoods work Two beautiful pictures pic-tures The Wasatch from Red Butte and Departing Glories the latter by Culmer are contrasting views in color one clear and pellucid of a frosty spring morningthe other a dreamy shadowy vision of the closing day + + + John Hafen whose devotion to his art shows his sincerity of purpose has contributed some splendid work Upon entering the visitor is confronted by a lifesize portrait of Hon B H Roberts a remarkably fine likeness and an exceedingly ex-ceedingly creditable picture His skill is also shown in the faithful likeness of C F N Twede while a water color of The Fishermans Home Lake Constance Con-stance is universally admired + + + Mr Culmer while not an artist by profession shows that he has neither lost pace nor interest In the affairs of art and is well represented by some choice paintings and a charming collection col-lection of water colors His most I auspicious piece The Gulls Home is one whose original color scheme immediately imme-diately commands attention and whose subject delights the hearts of the devotees of the hunt He has embodied em-bodied in a graceful picture a spray of the familiar sego lily and his Mountain Moun-tain Harmonies is a poem of somber tints Two familiar scenes have been artistically produced by him The House and Black Rock and The Bend of the Jordan There are many other little gems from his brush and while Mr Culmer has always been identified with the art interests of the city his pictures show that he Is second sec-ond to none in artistic conception and execution + + + There are many other meritorious paintings which will be reviewed later Some of the artists who contribute con-tribute are General Ottirger Marie Gorlinski HughPS Lorus Pratt Mary Teasdel A B Wright Carl Anderson Louise Richards and others + + The enterprise is one deserving of praise and patronage and we trust it will receive both I is simply a law of evolution that as a community grows in Intelligence i must develop a taste for the fine arts + + + There could be no nleasanter or more profitable way in which to spend an evejiing than at the exhibition The artists have worked diligently they deserve reward Success to them ELSIE RBASONER i M |
