ofthe Great Celebration At last nights session of the Utah SemiCentennial commission Chairman Chair-man Clawson Messrs Colborn Rog non H H Spencer Smith Nelden Moritz Mrs R C Easton Mrs G Y Wallace Miss Cora Hooper and Miss Emily Katz were present The proposition of J A Wright and C H Blomsterberg of the state board > f horticulture relative to the construction construc-tion of a floral float in aid of which they ask for an appropriation of 100 was referred to the committee on floats and parades I was decided to be the sense of the commission that 311 designs for floats to be built by counties of the state or by private individuals shall be passed upon by the commission before being built The idea is to prevent repetition tionA A second petition bearing the signatures signa-tures of a score or more of prominent ladies asking that 500 copies of Alfred Lambournes hook The Old Journey be purchased by the commission to be distributed as souvenirs to pioneers was received and filed I The application of S T Whitaker of Ogden for the position ot chief of the construction department was referred to the committee on floats and parades pa-rades An interesting discussion grew out of a suggestion concerning the jubilee colors I was informally decided that I sage green red and blue would be the colors but the question will again be discussed at the next meeting The Committee on designs offers the following suggestions for designs for floats and is desirous that intendjng compettor also select subjects in order or-der that the best results possible maybe may-be obtained write up the state and the jubilee for his transportation Commissioner Reed Smoot is in Colorado Dr William H Anderson of Portage writes for advertising matter He is a brother of Dr W F Anderson of this city and he is proud of the fact that the Drs Anderson are the two oldest practicing physicians in the state The New York World is anxious tog to-g e the jubilee a page writeup in its Sunday for that day Bulletin No 3 will be issued by the press bureau today Ten thousand copies will be printed and given to business men for use in their correspondence pondence The bulletin method is a yesterday C R Savage has announced that he Will take the photographs of pioneers without charge to them John Lowry a pioneer residing at ant registered at jubilee headquarters headquar-ters yesterday He has contributed a 4i drawing knife to the commission The knife was used by his father who is entitled to the distinction of having made the first chairs manufactured in I Utah Mr Lowry assisted Frank Pul len in burning the first kiln of brick This was in 1848 and the kiln was lo aled a short distance west of the fort He also participated in the first scrimmage scrim-mage with Indians recorded in Utah I t took place at what is now Pleasant Grove in Utah county and in it six Utes were killed The first log cabin built in this city is now owned by Ether Blanchard of pringville I is 1 by 1 by 8 feet in size and was originally erected on the old fort square now pioneer > end e-nd at the time Johnsons army held sway here it was taken on a wagon to Provo and from there to Springville I is used as a granary and is in a good state of preservation |
