Show i GOLD TrTTT DISTRICT Oregon Gold Camp That is Coming to the Front Colonel James A Panting took a party of gentlemen to his mines the first of the week says the Democrat of Baker City Ore and the party has returned enthusiastic over the prospects of the district which Is to be added to the list of bullion producers this season The Burnt River Mining company own all of the numerous quartz claims on I what has been known for some years as Gold Hill The mines are located 27 miles down the river from Baker City four mes down the river from Durkee station and one mile back of the river Itself The openings on the lower veins are located some 300 feet above the river and from that point to the summit 1200 I feet above are a series of drifts on ore showing the existence of at least ten L I parallel veins Each one of these veins i has been explored by drifts that run Inn I In-n ore from 50 to 125 feet The ore in the veins runs from 20 I inches to four feet In width and in assay value from 54 to 100 The ores are pure quartz brown to white in color and carrying through the main body free gold tellurides and traces of copper carbonates bonates while next to the footwall the vein Is heavily Impregnated with rich ulrihurets A crosscut tunnel has been started on the Spring Gulch mine i to tS all or the lodes at nearly right angle This tunnel is already In over 300 feet and has cut the SprIng Gulch lode showing a fine four foot wide body of ore Drifts and stopes on this ore are now being started and the mill will begin work upon it as I soon as It can be put up This main tunnel In addition to crosscutting to known Ieirs should expose one or two more as there are surface indications of their existence When the main tunnel Is I a little over 2000 feet In length It will be 1230 feet below the summit of the mountain From this It will be seen that a large amount of ore will be made accessible ac-cessible at a comparatively small cost The work that has been done since the Cincinnati parties took charge reflects decided credit upon the management of the genial colonel When he tpok charge there were no buildings at the mine and the little three stamp mill half a mile away was n bd order Already the main tunnel is equipped with T rails and Traux cars and ore bins and water reservoirs are building at the end of the track A large well arranged and well equipped boarding house has been completed com-pleted at the mouth of the gulch and a comfortable office and headquarters house is also being built As the main tunnel runs through granite rocks the water supply now developing I I de-veloping is large and the water soft and pure The tanks spoken of will throw water all over the houses giving ample I fire protection as well as supplying hot and cold water Half a mile below the mine men are I busy getting ready for the new mill which Is expected to arrive by the first of the week from the Rlsdon works This I mill will be erected by Mr AVilllam Pot ter one of the most experienced mill builders In the west While the mill will I not be enlarged beyond the ten stamps before rail It will make a good record I for itself in bullion as well aj serve to show the milling value of the ore In each I vein of the large group The mill la furnished with 1000pound steel stamps and Johnson concentrators and will be a model uptodate one in every respect The visitors say that this mine will be a favorite one for Baker people to visit not only to study the work as a model but because of Its pleasant surroundings On the road to the mine one passes the opal mine recently sold to eastern parties The valley is dotted with ranches and fruit farms while on the hills around the old stage station of AVeatherby may be seen extensive placer diggings that have been worked for years Within a mile I radius one may mine gold wash out gold raise apples pears prunes and all small fruits or dig out opals It Is an unusual I combination that visitors will appreciate |
