Show I IOWA ALL RIGHT Trial Trip Made to the Satisfaction of All Concerned Boston Mass April 7Under favorable favor-able conditions and to he satisfaction of all concerned UuJ Unlted States battleship bat-tleship Iowa wasgivenher official trial today over the Cape Ann course and under the inspection of the naval board appointed for the purpose On the trial I she made an average speed of 17 knots i over the 66mile course exceeding her I I contract speed by one knot and winning win-ning a bonus Of 200000 for her builders build-ers The figuring of 17 knots is a close I one and there is not much of a margin mar-gin to allow for errors but since the I tidal corrections are likely to be in the ships favor it reasonably certain I that the official figures will show 17 I knots She finished her run after I nearly five hours of continuous steaming steam-ing in just as good condition as when she started and without the least defect de-fect being apparent anywhere and without the slightest heating of her I bearings The weather conditions were favorable for making steam and the boilers showed an average pressure of I 152 pounds or all that could be expected I ex-pected with the air pressure allowed I in the closed fire rooms Both engines I ran with remarkable uniformity the revolutions of the screws not falling below I be-low 111 per minute nor rising above 118M and averaging 112 for the run I The EDeed was also remarkably uniform uni-form between the several marks along the course and shows that the vessel I makes scarcely any spurts but kept close to her best work all the time the I I variations being almost whouy due to the changing depths of the water Immediately I Im-mediately after the completion of the course the Iowa was swung as rapidly to nort and then to starboard for a I half circle under way to determine I the maneuvering ability She answered I answer-ed her helm readily and showed the possibility of turning a circle of less I than 400 yards 1 The absence of vibration even when the shin was driven at her highest speed was very marked In fact the vibration could hardly be felt except at the extreme bow and stern The trial showed in short that little is left to be desired either in design or construction construc-tion and the official board expressed it unofficially so But the official report will be the same The stations were 66 miles apart and the course was S3 miles I northeast from the first station about five miles northeast of Thatchers Island Is-land to the sixth station about a mile to the eastward of Boone Island buoy and return The elapsed time for the first half was 15723 Average speed 16873 knots For the second half 15521 average speed 1747 Average sped for the entire distance 17 knots Elapsed time 35247 The ship left her moorings in Boston harbor for the race course at 830 a m and returned to her anchorage off the lower light shortly after 4 oclock p m To the newspaper men on board Mr Edwin S Cramp expressed himself as perfectly satisfied with the showing made bv the chin and with her behavior be-havior The Iowa will sail early Thursday Thurs-day morning for Philadelphia |
