Show REGISTER MGBEWS CASE A great many protests against the confirmation of Mr McGrew as register regis-ter of the land office have been forwarded for-warded to the president f As far as we are aware the objection to Mr McGrew is political and not personal per-sonal This objection is that he was appointed from Arizona Moreover Mr McGrew before his appointment as register of the land office had been i an applicant for the governorship of Arizona Standing on the St Louis platform he must have considered I himself a resident of Arizona for that platform laid it down as one of the I principles of the Republican party that I All the federal officers appointed for the territories should be selected from bona fide residents thereof and the I right of selfgovernment should be accorded ac-corded as far as practicable I The people of Utah ask the Republican Repub-lican administration to stand by that declaration in making federal appointments appoint-ments for the state of Utah When Utah was a territory the people ex I pected and were never disappointed in their expectation nonresidents to be appointed to fill federal offices but now that Utah has become a state they expect ex-pect and have a right to that federal offices will be filled by bona fide residents resi-dents Senator Cannon says as shown in a Washington special In The Herald of yesterday that he will oppose Mr Mc Grews confirmation because he believes be-lieves he ought to stand by the declaration declara-tion of his application for governor of Arizona which fixes his residence in that territory and not In Utah Senator Rawlins says that he will leave the matter in Senator Cannons hands but that he will approve his course when the case is reported to the senate This Is as it should be The people of the state irrespective of party will approve ap-prove of the senators course |
