Show A LESSON IN EDUCATION The other day there was a small fire in one jf the public school buIldings but there was no panic among the pupils pu-pils At the sound of the gong eight hundred of them ceased work arose and at the word marched out of their rooms and out of the building Without With-out previous drill in this work there would have been a great panic and most probably many injured if not killed And how was all this avoIded and the pupils gotten out of the building build-ing in the least possible time and with the least possible excitement Through discipline through education which Is discipline The pupils of the Grant school may pass through the various grades Into the high school and from the high school through the university gathering gather-ing honors everywhere but they wIll never learn a more valuable lesson than they did last week when that fire gong was sounded In that respect they had been truly educated They had learned to subdue fear and suppress excitement excite-ment and so long as they shall hive they will never forget that presence of nind averted a panic and avoided a possible grave danger And education is the presence and domination of mind at all times If these young pupils of the Grant school and the pupils of all the schools throughout the state as i well when they become men and omen will meet the obstacles and crises of life with the same calm and presence of mind that they did this threatened fire they will minimize the difficulty and danger and in most cases easily overcome them If they are properly prop-erly educated If their teachers lead them aright they will learn to appreciate I appre-ciate aM things of whatsoever nature at thei true value The very best possible I pos-sible result of education is to know things as they are and in so far as I schooling fails to fit children to see and krow things as they are it is not education I I edu-cation but useless pedantry If the pupils of our schools can be so Educated that when they grow up to manhood and womanhood they will be as calm and steady when cries of fire and false alarms sweep over the land as were the Grant school pupils when I the fire gong sounded for them they will be a safeguard to the nation no Ii matter what peril may threaten |
