Show MB PEATTS NOMINATION REJECTED RE-JECTED It fs to be hoped that Mr Pratts organ or-gan will now admit that he cannot be confirmed as chief of police The action ac-tion of the city council last night clearly Indicates that his confirmation is impossible The nomination of Mr Pratt having been referred back to the mayor for reconsideration Mayor Clark should carefully consider the matter and if he is not satisfied regarding public pub-lic sentiment In relation to this particular partic-ular appointment he can do a little Investigating on his own account and if he can find anything like a general desire on the part of the people that Mr Pratt shall be made chief of police then he should insist upon the appointment appoint-ment otherwise he should withdraw it and send in the name of some other competent man for the place I The Herald has had no desire to pursue pur-sue Mr Pratt or subject him to the humiliation of defeat on the contrary The Herald would have preferred that Mr Pratt should have recognized the fact that the people generally do not I desire him for chief of police and have i retired gracefully while there was yet time It is hinted that Mr Pratt Intends to try and assume the office of chief of police on the theory that he holds over under the law That would be a very unwise thing for him to attempt and his friends can do him no better service or in very truth be friends to him in need than to persuade him that there is a time to quit and in his case that time is right now Even should it be possible to so construe the law as to permit such a conclusion to be drawn it j would not be wise for Mr Pratt to tale advantage of it I The city council after very careful consideration has decided to send Mr Pratts name back to Mayor Clark in i the most respectful manner and that action Is In accord with the wish of a great majority of the people of Salt Lake City |
