Show HOT WEHER ARB RMJTI 1 r CHOP DAMAGE HAS REACHES FORTY PER CENT Gloomy Outlook For Kansas and Oklahoma Ok-lahoma Farmers Prostrations at I St Louis Kansas City Still Sweltering Kansas City Aug 1AU Kansas City and vicinity sweltered again today to-day through the third successive day of 100 degrees of heat The government govern-ment weather bureau reports show 100 drsjrecs and over from 2 p m until after 5 oclock this evening the maximum imum being at 4 p m when 102 degrees I de-grees were recorded At 7 oclock this I evening the reading was 03 Throughout Kansas the same conditions II condi-tions prevail and the reports as to the condition of the corn crop are very f gloomy Hot winds are general throughout the state and in the southern south-ern and western parts rain has been needed for many days and farmers 7 are losing hope Several localities in the southern part of the state report that the farmers are cutting their corn in order to preserve it for fodder xjfcti CROP DAMAGE Topeka Kan Aug Reports as to the damage to corn crops in Kansas Oklahoma and the Cherokee Strip as a result of drouth and the prevailing hot winds are pouring into headquarters here of the Santa Fe and Rock Island roads whose lines practically cover the state A summary of these reports indicate in-dicate the conditions to be as follows In Oklahoma i is estimated that the damage will amount to 20 per cent The damage In southern Kansas east of Winfleld is slight upland fields being be-ing the only ones hurt West of Win field the damage fs estimated at 50 percent per-cent Along the Santa Fe for 100 miles west of Emporia on the main line a 60 per cent damage has been sustained The Hutchinson branch to Kingley reports re-ports 50 per cent From McPherson north to the Nebraska Ne-braska line and in eastern and northeastern north-eastern Kansas the railroad reports state that the crop has not been seriously seri-ously injured I is estimated that the damage to the crop generally through the state of Kansas Oklahoma and the Cherokee Chero-kee Strip is about 40 per cent Rail road officials here state that if the hot winds continue two days longer the damage will amount to 60 to 70 percent I per-cent PROSTRATIONS AT S LOUIS I St Louis Aug Ninetyeight degrees de-grees in the shade was registered bv I the weather bureau at 4 oclock this afternoon This was the maximum temperature of the day On the streets where the full force of the sun was felt thermometers showed 100 and over I Tonight i is cnly a few degrees cooler I There were several prostrations today the most serious being Herman Moss serous aged 23 and Arthur Gumners aged 43 Aleanor Sohrman Joine Butter Joseph Rugli and William Whitney were also overcome by heat The last named died after being taken to the city hospital hos-pital and the condition of the others is serious This was the hottest day of the season sea-son At midnight the coolest place in the city was on top of the federal building where the thermometer registered 86 HOT AT LOUISVILLE Louisville Ky Aug IThe temperature tem-perature in this vicinity took a sudden rise today At 7 a m the mercury registered 76 degrees and i gradually rose until at 330 oclock 100 was recorded unt corded This evening a good breeze sprang up causing the thermometer to drop 17 degrees No prostrations are reported < |
