Several Offices Vacant I anti Will Remain Unfilled Unless Rbi Honors Backbone is Soft cced PROVO Jan 11 Mayor Holbrook still seems determined to rule in Provo with a rod of iron lu other words he proposes to fill every appointive office with all of his favorites whether or not such favorites are acceptable to his own party He still seems Ignorant Ig-norant of the fact that the city council Is Democratic and that they should have some voice in determining who shall administer the affairs of the city during the coming two years The majority ma-jority of the Republican members of the city council are perfectly willing to give the Democrats fair and equal representation in the appointments and an understanding between them to this effect was entered into but the good mayor thus far wholly ignores it and persists in naming gentlemen who are obnoxious to the general public At the meeting of the city council last evening several appointments were confirmed but the Democrats drew the line at city attorney and city surveyor sur-veyor and these offices still remain vacant j va-cant and will undoubtedly continue so unless Democrats are named to fill them Owing to the extreme partisan action of this great appointing power Provo City is left without a policeman At the November election Marshal Knight Republican was turned down and S W Sharp Democrat was elected elect-ed This little circumstance greatly troubled the mayor and in order that he might be sure of a Republican policeman po-liceman he prevailed on the then incumbent In-cumbent to tender his resignation before be-fore the end of the year thus enabling him to send into the then Republican cty council an appointment In the hopes that it would be confirmed But the old guards refused to respond to the party lash and as a result the city began the new year without a policeman police-man The city ordinance however gave the marshal the right to appoint deputies and this he has done and so the order of the city is being preserved notwithstanding the good mayor has been unable to carry his point and foist upon the city every person he desired de-sired no matter how objectionable he might be Will Prcvoa mayor ever learn that h ° does not own the world At the couicil meeting last evening the first confirmation asked for was that of J W N Whitecotton as city attorney Newel D moved that the appointment be not confirmed which was carried The six Democrats and two of the four republicans voting against the confirmation The Demo atlc members now propose to make the fight on the appointment of attorney attor-ney road supervisor and policemen contending that these offices were to be filled by Democrats according to agreement entered into by both parties in caucus The public is on the side of the council and express the be hei that the mayor will accede to the agreement and appoint W H King as city attorney and other known Democrats Demo-crats to the other positions The public pub-lic is tired of this bickering and will refuse to stand by the mayor It remains re-mains in his power to settle this thing at once and if he refuses to do so he alone must take the responsibility and abide the consequences his party will repudiate him if he does not The council will meet again next Monday evening when the other appointments will be presented Notes A marriage license was issued
