| Show FOKEWS RELATIONS Friendly Feeling Toward Cuba J Apparent WASHINGTON Jan 1L The senate committee on foreign relations was In 4 session two hours today discusisng the Cuban Armenian and Venezuelan questions with incidental reference tote to-te Monroe doctrine No final action was taken on any bills or joint resolutions resolu-tions bearing UDon the subjects in band but all were referred to subcommittees sub-committees for special investigation and report at a future meeting The committee adjourned to meet subject to the call of the chairman The committee decided upon a positive posi-tive affirmation of the Monroe doctrine toy congress A subcommittee was appointed to draft a resolution declaring declar-ing the sense of congress on this question ques-tion The discussion on this point was conducted upon the basis of Senator Lodges resolution which seemed to met the approval of a majority of the xrernbtis Senator Turpie took exception excep-tion to some of the phraseology of this I resolution but there is little question h b C I that the measure as reported will adhere ad-here closely to Lodges resolution The subcommittee is expected to report at the next full meeting of the committee or it is possible the commIttee com-mittee will be polled without a formal meeting The committee was almost unanimous unani-mous in the advocacy of the declaration declara-tion on the Monroe doctrine Senator Gray i understood to have taken a position adverse to such declaration Sherman Lodge and Morgan were appointed to consider the Cuban question ques-tion and the discussion In the com ton mittee indicated that whatever maybe may-be done if anything will be on the lines of the recognition of the belligerency belliger-ency of the Insurgents I was apparent that 1 friendly feeling feel-ing toward the insurgents pervaded the committee but the inclination appeared ap-peared to be against immediate action tion ton The opinion was expressed by the most pronounced friends of the insurgents insur-gents that precipitate action might do them more harm than good There are also many other circumstances to betaken be-taken into consideration and the question ques-tion presents so many phases that considerable con-siderable time will be necessary for the proper investigation of the question No immediate report therefore is expected ex-pected The Armenian question was taken up and also referred to a subcommittee subcommit-tee The opinion was very general that the administration should be supported I in any effort it might make looking to the protection of Americans in the Turkish territory and that the United States should make its influence felt in that quarter The opinions advanced were most all to the effect that the Venezuelan affair had served to emphasize the wisdom wis-dom of the Monroe doctrine and to 10nroe show that the time was ripe for an official declaration of it by the lawmaking law-making powers of the land |
