Show I CAPTAIN JAMES B BRETT RETURNS JiI 1 dLt1 CAPTAIN J B BET TWENTYFOURTH INFANTRY Captain James E Brett of the Twentyfourth United States infantry and another of the heroes of San Juan battlefield returned home yesterday afternoon on the Union Pacific flyer He was met at the depot by a few friends from the post and was at once driven to Fort Douglas where he joined his family Captain Brett felt very much fatigued fa-tigued after the long journey and this added to the fact that he is naturally reserved made an extended interview impossible He looks quite well however how-ever In fact better than when he left and when he has obtained some needed rest will not be much worse for his experience in Cuba His ajm he carries in a sling and while the wound does not pain him much now there are crave fears that he will never again exercise the use of this member I The wound is a peculiar one The bullet bul-let entered the right arm just above the wrist shattering the bones into splinters up to the elbow Reentering above the elbow it fractured the bone a few Inches below the shoulder joint While in the hospital at Tampa several sev-eral nieces of bone were removed The I elbow joint is stiff but he can exercise the finger muscles and it is thought by a operation the stiffness can betaken be-taken out of the entire arm Captain Brett has nothing to say concerning con-cerning his own part in the fight His company it will be remembered took a prominent part in the storming of San Juan hill when Lieutenant Augustin was killed All that has been said about the fierceness of that battle is corroborated by Captain Brett who is loud in his praise of the work of the Twentyfourth every man of which acquitted ac-quitted himself nobly Captain James E Brett is a native of North Carolina He entered the army as a private In company K Twelfth infantry Sept 23 1870 and by meritorious service has made his way to his present position He served as hospital steward until July 12 1880 when he accepted the appointment of second lieutenant of the Twentyfourth infantry serving in this capacity until he was commissioned first lieutenant Dec 22 1887 Shortly before his departure de-parture for the front he received his commission as captain He Is one of the most popular officers of the Twenty fourth and has a host of friends who wH wish him a complete recovery I |
