service opened by the singing of Behold the Mountain of the Lord after which Joseph E Taylor invoked in-voked divine guidance and asked the Almighty to so direct the young peo DIe > of the church that they would walk in the paths that had been marked out for them by the elder members of the church The choir then sang Oh My Father most beautifully THE MEMBERSHIP This was followed by the announcement announce-ment of officials for the ensuing year and the reading of the secretarys report I re-port which showed the total number of associations in the stake to be 55 i having a total membership of 3473 EMILY CALDWELL Emily Caldwell the first speaker said no one would be saved in ignorance ignor-ance I was well then for the Lat terday Saints to cease living in a false faith To the knowledge and testimony I tes-timony we must go for the light that I is to guide us I was not enough to be I good We must be good for something Let us prepare ourselves to give comprehensive com-prehensive reasons for the faith that we allege to possess The speaker likened the young men and women to I the salt of the earth who by their influence In-fluence and walk mould the custom of the coming generation She spoke brilliantly liantly of womans place in religious and social work and was warmly congratulated con-gratulated at the close for her splendid splen-did effort GEORGE M CANNON I Elder George 11 Cannon president of the Forest Dale association was the next speakey He believed from observation obser-vation that there never has been a vaton time when the 1 I associations were better organized than at present and never had so much work been accomplished accom-plished as during the past year The improvement among the young ladies associations was bven more marked for the women were as a rule more diligent gent in the study of the gospel Their zeal is most commendable a they are conducting their own meetings and thus set their brethren a good example While man was the noblest work of God he also conferred the greatest blessing when he gave man woman and she through her influence is doing do-ing more to keep their brethren in the path of righteousness than anything else I Mr John Robinson at this point sang Abraham a baritone solo entitled Lord God of EMMA GODDARD Emma Goddard one of the general state aids reported magnificent progress prog-ress among the various associations in Utah and adjoining states She urged upon the young to seek the testimony of Jesus Christ and thus have a rea son to present In defense of professed faith She spoke of the influence of good menmen of God She remembered remem-bered with pleasure and satisfaction satsfacton one young lady who testified at the last conference of the influence of good men menShe She told me said the speaker one incident which made a profound impression Im-pression upon me This young lady was once at a dance and in the same set fet was one of our church officials She told me she wished that the caller might command grand right and left all the time in order that she might grasp the hand of that great man so much good did seem to come from a frol simple touch of the hand And a I stood there this young lady told me I was more than ever convinced of the justice of polygamy for I wished there that I might be that mans wife even If he had 50 others PRESIDENT ANGUS M CANNON President Angus M Cannon said he wondered how many of the young women wo-men could knit a pair of socks laundry laun-dry a shirt or mend clothes so that tlat the young men when they get mar ma ried wouldnt have their toes sticking out and have to send their shirts to a Chinaman There was a tendency these days to put aside these simple arts of the household and this tendency ten-dency was not commendable God help us to find people who will teach t us how to workbe saiq and mai o 1 I I r us in fact bees of the Deseret and not drones of society I wish that ever young man and woman would keep a journal to note down their doings every day I they can be brought to a realization that everything they do will have to be accounted ac-counted for there wouldnt be so many going to the beach to the Lagoon and to Calders park on Sundays God help Amen us to prevent such a state of affairs RULON S WELLS Rulon S Wells the next speaker said the young people should not revile any of the superfor officials of the church I was wrong to criticise them because it mitated against attaining the common com-mon ground of unity so necessary in church work He believed there Church beleved were more people within the Mormon church of whom it could be truthfully said that they are united on these vital principles of life than in any other organization or-ganization Thlssjact he said was being be-ing taken into consideration by the philosophers of the world He thought nothing was too good for the Latterday Saints He believed as a people they were destined to become be-come very rich to enjoy all beautiful things Industry was the great essential essen-tial to success and possession of happiness APOSTLE WOODRUFF Apostle Owen Woodruff mercilessly excoriated the men who would smoke on the street gars and puff the smoke info faces of ladies He took it for granted that they were not Latterday Saints for they knew better or ought to at least The fact that such a condition con-dition existed demonstrated that the evil spirit was abroad and the ffuty of the Saints va to be up in doing and discourage such practices We mean and ought to make all our young ladies and young men in truth ladies and gentlemen and to that end let us work he closed Mrs Dougall made a very good talk urging the mothers to teach their boys to be good husbands So much was said about the young ladies but the speaker insisted that the women generally made good wives The trouble was more of ten on the other side The choir sang Glory Be to God Our Deliverer and the conference was adjourned l |
