Show WALON AND RTGHIE Endorsed By the State Executive Committee RITCHIE FOR ATTORNEY AND WESLEY OP COURSE ORt OR-t THE LAND BOARD r M Lanii an Will Present Their Credentials Cre-dentials While On His Visit East I Going to Have a Personal Conference With McKinley Thinks to Clear the Political Horizon Hor-izon of Utah Pight Is on Eichnor p r In an editorial paragraph a day or two since the Tribune says it is a pity a man cannot go eastward to visit relatives rela-tives and to attend to some strictly business affairs without being accused of being on a mission connected with politics and a jat sort of thing Oh well if that was really the case i it would be pitiful Of course the paragraph para-graph is intended a a sort of evasion of The Heralds statement that Mr Lannan had gone east incidentally to see the president about Utah appointments appoint-ments and the balance No doubt Mr Lannan goes to see his aged mother who is 85 That is commendable com-mendable on his part and the venerable old lady will no doubt be very glad to meet her son But when a man visits his mother is it really necessary that he should carry in his pocket an endorsement en-dorsement ca Wesley K Walton for the land office and one of Judge Ritchie for United States attorney made by the executive committee of the state committee of the Republican party in such a secretive way that even the Tribune declined to make a matter of news of i Mr Lannan has those endorsements and has been instructed to visit the president and see him in relation to them I you dont believe this just ask John E Dooly The executive committee com-mittee held its meeting last week and these two men were decided upon The endorsements were made out and handed hand-ed to Mr Lannan who took them with him Close scrutiny of the news columns col-umns of the Tribune for the next few days will doubtless reveal a paragraph from the eminent Mr Annin at Washington Wash-ington to the effect that Mr P H Lannan of Salt Lake City had an audience au-dience with the president this afternoon after-noon relating to Utah appointments Although the president was very busy he found time to shake hands with his old personal friend Mr Lannan and devoted a pleasant half hour talking over the old times when they went to I school Lannan in Massachusetts and McKinley in Ohio I is conceded by Secretary Sherman that Mr Lannan made a profound impression and that his visit will do much toward scraping the cloudy gobs from the horizon of Utah politics Utah will be in the Republican Re-publican column in 1900 I The endorsement of Ritchie comes in the nature of a surprise and is a movement move-ment aimed and directed at D C Eich nor But it will fail of its intent because be-cause from indications it would seem that the president has made up his mind already and will not care to be bothered by any more applications There is one phase of this Republican scramble for office which looks amusing to one not identified with that double barrelled organization Last fall the McKinley and silver wings were beating beat-ing each other with a ferocity born of the most intense dislike while this year some of thf erstwhile silver men are I imploring ficKinley to appoint gold men to office I is indeed very funny But the Tribune has a reasonable excuse ex-cuse for not supporting McKinley I can plead pressure of business engagements en-gagements |
