Show Y H C A BANQUET The Whites and Blues > Celebrate Cele-brate the Close of the Contest Last night was certainly a joyous one to the members of the white and blue committees which have been making such strenuous efforts during the nast two months to lead in the great association membership contest in which over two hundred new members were added to the Young Mens Christian association as-sociation The winners in the contest were toe > to-e banQueted by the association and the whites who scored 110 against 106 for their opponents In the fulness of their hearts invited the blues to share their hospitality The offer was very gladly accepted and the wellladen tables were surrounded by the whites under the leadership of lr 12 G Ro non the blues commanded by Mr F E Houghton committees and a few other guests of the commitees The tables arranged in the form of the letter T wer presided over by Dr E V Silver as toastmaster supported by Dr T C iiiff Professor Metcalf Prof TibbalsMfrssrs C H Parsons I Scott Anders 1 Samuel Raney and E i E ShephardA Various toasts were re spondedtoextemporaneously mostly in a < hum toe1t arid questions of a local and natipnal character were also jitroducewfor short > comment by those 1 Lir terThe chosen at the m etb1t rthStotistmas The Venezuelan question received some pointed remarks from Professor Byron Cummings Dr Iliffi presented the great and ever widening possibilities of the association as a home for the thousands of yourie men who will be looking to Salt Lake City and Utah during the coming years for permanent or temporary tempor-ary business locations and several others brought out the grand opportunity for the young men of the association to develop de-velop their talents in the service to be I rendered to other young men through the various channels of committee use iulness Mr E E Shephard the winner of the contest with twentyfive new members to his credit was presented with a very fine cold button with all the Y M C A emblems engraved upon I Dr E V I Silver made the presentation In the absence ab-sence of President 1 A Grant whose gIft it was January 2 will see the inauguration of a new blue and red contest the reds under the leadership of John T Axton general secretary and with L C Dale physical director at the head of the blues both of them having had considerable experience in committee work The cyvle show to be held about the 15th or 20th of February will open the season for the association wheel club and the gymnastic carnival to be given also during February Is occupying the sneclal attention of the athletic members mem-bers at the present time while the number num-ber and variety of attractions planned for the benefit of members between now and the opening of outdoor athletics will more than repay the expense of a membership In the Y M C A |
