Importance Impor-tance Every Divj Practically the Whole Interior of the Island from East to West With the Exception ception or Large Towns in Possession Pos-session of the Cubans CHICAGO Jan 14A special from Boston says Startling information has been received re-ceived from Havana by a prominent Cuban tobacco dealer here whose interests in-terests in the island forbid using his name There Is a general opinion says the latter both among insurgents and Spaniards that General Campos has become demented His actions not only in the direction of the campaign cam-paign but his private and ordinary doings are such as to give good grounds for this belief Gomez has no idea of attacking Havana but his plan is to cut off the citys supplies There is no doubt that fully half of the citizens and populace are Cuban sympathizers Americans are thoroughly detested by the Spaniards Span-iards The situation is serious A great deal of American property has been destroyed and terrible atrocities will be committed upon Americans The United States needs a war ship or two in Havana harbor Reinforcements for the Rebels I NEW YORK Jan 14A local paper pa-per says Intelligence has been received re-ceived by a prominent member of the Cuban party in New York of the arrival ar-rival of an important auxiliary to the insurgent forces Reports have already al-ready been published stating that a filibustering expedition under Garcia had landed near Havana A party consisting of forty men under un-der the leadership of Alfredo lieborde has landed at Batobano on the west coast of the island within a short distance dis-tance of Havana The party is well equipped Gomez and Maceo are hovering in the vicinity with upward of 4000 troops Ever since the revolution broke outlast out-last February the rebel leader Del Gardo with 400 men has been underarms under-arms at Batabano This party will be joined by the new arrivals and the combined force will join the main army The intelligence is considered of the greatest importance by ail the Cubans to whom it has been communicated com-municated Fighting Around Havana HAVANA Jan HAt noon today continued artillery firing was heard south of RIncon not far from Bejucal The town was attacked by Insurgents I yesterday but they were forced to retreat re-treat after a battle lasting I is claimed five hours but it is admitted the insurgents plundered the stores in the outlying streets of Bejucal and burned houses and destroyed the railroad road depot Previously they had burned the town of Salud and partly destroyed Quivican They burned freight trains and destroyed every thing a they pushed northward toward to-ward Havana This force of Insurgents is the one sut > r > osed to be commanded by Gomez although It has been insisted in-sisted that he is still in the province of Pinar del Dio and was in the conflict con-flict with the Spanish troops commanded command-ed by General Linares I is believed an important engagement is taking place Confirmation has been received from the eastern nrovinces that the leaders Ra > bi Jose Mace Rivero and others at the head of strong forces of insurgents insur-gents from the provinces of Puerto Principe believed to be much better armed than any previous force and to have been reinforced by filibustering expeditions containing numbers of Americans are moving eastward apparently ap-parently with the intention of reinforcing rein-forcing the insurgents now operating in the neighborhood of Havana Thpqp Insurgent forces are said to have moved int the Remedios district and to have moved in a northwesterly direction di-rection from Sancti Espiritus to Re mpdios and from there on westward The captaingeneral has been forced to meet this move by sending hack towards Santa Clara several columns of troons which were on their way through the province of flratanzas to reinforce his forces in this vicinity The insurgents i is believed will thus be able to continue for some time longer their almost unchecked operations opera-tions and the if Spanish generals arc not able to prevent a junction of all the insurgent forces in this now vicinity i vi-cinity the situation will become more critical Several insurgent bands numbering from 100 to 300 men are reported to have gathered in the provinces of Colon Co-lon and Matanzas and all of these will help to swell the Maceo forces The Insurrection Is INCREASING IN IMPORTANCE IP IMPOR14NCE every day Practically the whole interior in-terior of the island from east to west with the exception of the lame towns is in the possession of the insurgents who have burned everything combustible combusti-ble and have levied tribute right and left under the very nosES of the Soan Ish commanders and cutting down there the-re enue of the Spanish government from Cuban sources about SO per cent The insurgents are not acting hast its in any way Thev have plenty of time before them and intend to make rmlte the most of it They have a central government established at ain a-In the province of Puerto Prinrine ThPir forces are organized in excellent military style they have r ular army workshops hosnltals In addition to the field hospitals depots of nrovlslons and ammunition etc Their cavalry is vastly superior both in number and oualitv to that of the Spaniards and the military experts assert that the importation of 3 000 or 4000 Spanish cavalry from Spain will in no way affect the situation as the Spanish horses CANNOT STAND THE CLIMATE The weak point of the Cuban army isIs is-Is artillery They have only a few
