| Show r THE LOCAL STRIKE i i The strike of the bricklayers on what is popularly termed the Oregon Short I Line office buildins is a matter of regret I re-gret Thereisno building boom going I on nor has there been for a number of years and when some weeks aero it was announced that this building I was going tobe > erected all felt that it was a matter of congratulation as it was as it wouldadd an improvement to the town and furnish some emnlor ment to men who had been wanting it for a long time Now comes this strike Of the merits of ft we do not sneak but we believe we voice public sentiment senti-ment when we say that it seems a very unwise thing for men who are setting three dollars a day in excessively hard and dull times to strike for four dollars dol-lars a day Were times flush and work abundant were employers looking for men rather than men looking for employment em-ployment it would be entirely different That tne places of the striking bricklayers brick-layers can be readily filled there is no question and most likely they will be The strike may continue for sometime some-time or it may be settled forthwith it is to be hoped it wilt be If it is not and the board of arbitration which was created last winter takescogni zance of it it will be interesting to note just what efficacy In matters of this kind it has The fatal defects in such boards no matter how competent the members thereof may be is that they have no compulsory powers They can neither compel the submission to them of disputes nor after they have been submitted can they compel compliance com-pliance with their decision They are very much in the same position that congress was under the articles of confederation con-federation they can recommend everything every-thing and do nothing Anyhow this strike may afford the arbitration commissioners com-missioners an opportunity to wear their red top boots I |
