Show A NICE POINT Citizenship Question Between America Amer-ica and Germany New York May 4A dispatch from Washington to the Herald says that the latest citizenship question which has arisen between this government and Germany has resulted in the Issu ance of Instructions by the state department de-partment to Ambassador Uhl directing him to make a demand for the immediate Im-mediate release of an American citizen citi-zen named Mayer who the authorities consider has been wrongfully impressed Im-pressed Into the military service of the German government A new and important im-portant issue has been raised in this case Mayer was born in this country i of a German subject the latter although though living here for some years I failed to take out naturalization paper When the child was 1 or 1 years of I age his parents returned to their native I land Mayer attended t nan schools I and when he reached the age of 21 he wag informed that he must enter the I I German army Mayer reused to enlist on the ground that he was an American Amer-ican citizen The case was brought to the retention of the American ambassador ambas-sador who forwarded the papers to Washington for the state departments consideration Investigation showed that Mayer really had a claim on this government The department states in its instructions to the ambassador that persons born on American soil are Americans and as such are entitled to the protection of this government When the matter was first brought to the attention of the German authori ties they denied the right of the United States to Interfere holding that as Mayer was born of a German subject he was a German citizen The authorities found that in another case of military imprisonment which was considered some years ago Germany admitted practically the contention now raised The authorities are confident con-fident the demand of this government I will be complied with |
