opened up in the upper workings work-Ings of this mine The Mammoth shaft is now down to the 1300 foot level but a winze has been sunk from one of the levels at this depth to the 1400 foot level where bodies main it was found that the ore tained their strength and value in c 3 fact a decided improvement was noted I On the lGOO level a pony engine is I employed in raising the ore and waste from the l40u This ore is dumped from the bucket into a car which is pushed onto the cage and hoisted through the shaft to the surface by which means the output of the mine is virtually handled but once The development of the 1400 level has resulted so encouragingly that it is now the intention to sink another winze 1 to the Lotto and work on this will begin be-gin at an early day It has been rumored on the streets that the Mammoth would soon declare a dividend but The Herald is authoritatively authori-tatively informed that if the company decides to put in a new hoist in order to sink to a greater depth no dividends divi-dends will be paid until this work is I lompleted and paid for and it is understood un-derstood that plans and specifications > I for the new hoist are now being prepared pre-pared and that bids for its construction construc-tion will be received at an early day The Mammoth mill recently paid for from the proceeds of the mine is a wonderful and extensive piece of mechanism Everything about the 9 plant and the mine is strictly up to date and it is hinted that the new hoist will be perfect in every particular particu-lar The Mammoth company is conservative conserva-tive to the extent that complaint has been made that it is too exclusive but money talks and wind will never open a mine and the stockholders of the I Mammoth are to be congratulated upon the fact that the affairs of the company are in the hands of careful I t and capable men Although the Mammoth has not paid dividends for some time the confidence 1 maintained by the public in the future of this mine is evidenced by the fact that within the brief space of three I months the stock of the company has advanced in value from 150 to 309 The Mammoth shipped twenty carloads car-loads of hign grade ore during the month of April part of which averaged 70 and over to the ton besides which it marketed the product of its large millUpon the completion of its new hoist the output of this mine will be something some-thing to brag of in mining circles nULJlOxnECIi VS EUREKA HIM The Claim and Counter Claim Suit r Now Being Tried Judge Street and a jury were occupied occu-pied yesterday with the case of the BullionBeck and Champion Mining company against the Eureka Hill Mining company in which the plaintiff claims 25300 damages for alleged trespass tres-pass A separate suit of the Eureka Hill Mining company vs the Bullion Beck and Champion Mining company in which the plaintiff claimed 5440 damages was treated as a counterclaim counter-claim and both c ses tried together In the first case the plaintiff claims I that it owns a mining claim known as lot 76 in the Tintic mining district and that the defendant since October 17 I 1892 wrongfully entered upon the same and removed therefrom ores to the value of 25300 for which judgment is prayed In the counter suit the Eureka Hill claims to be the owner of a portion of the claim lot 76 and that the Bullion Beck extracted ores therefrom to the value of 5440 for which they ask I judgment Messrs Rawlins Critchlow and W C Hall represented the BullionBeck and Champion company and Bennett Harkness Howat Bradley the Eureka I nature na-ture noticeable in the transactions on the floor of the mining exchange ex-change yesterday yet the tone of v oj the market was good and quotations as a general rule ranged stronger and higher than usual There was an active demand for Galena which sold readily at 5L92V which is at a higher figure than this stock had previously sold for which fact can be accounted for on the ground that the Galena company is now paying regular monthly dividends Four Aces also developed an upward tendency and a thousand shares changed hands at 3344 cents Mercur was a trifle lower In the bidding bid-ding than usual but holders were firm at an advance and no trading was din d-in Mammoth on the contrary was In brisk demand at advancing figures but sellers I managed to keep a safe distance away and held for a rise which from all indications in-dications will soon take place Among the unlisted stocks Swansea was undeniably very strong selling readily at SLTT1 and SLSO while street sales were insight in-sight DEPOSIT OF AGATEONYX Rich Stones and Gems Found in the County of Grand It has been said that Utah possessed within her environments every known mineral precious stones and gems coal and iron with the exception of tin In the mineral line there is no limit to our wealth and as for coal and iron the supply is inexhaustible Onyx and marble are found in many places and throughout the state Mercur has the green gemstones and in various localities locali-ties within the limits of our commonwealth common-wealth crystals are found that make beautiful settings for rings and other articles for personal adornment but it was left for Grand county to add its treasures to this list in the way of what is called agateonyx which is a beautifully variegated colored stone very fine and hare in its texture and capable of taking on a very high polish Yesterday morning E G Rognon of this city received a box of specimens of this agateonyx from Agate station on the Rro Grande Western road in Grand county near which this deposit of precious stone is located These specimens spec-imens are rich in coloring representing represent-ing about all the colors of the rainbow rain-bow The deposit Is extensive and this stone can be quarried in almost any desired shape or size according to the use intended which embraces pen > holders hold-ers breast pins paper weights covers for card oases vases urns knife handles han-dles and for a hundred other useful and ornamental purposes Mr Rognon always interested in the development of the wonderful resources of Utah informs The Herald that at Agate station over a thousand acres of agateonyx land have been located by Grand county people and parties living in Grand Junction Colorado lie also states that the specimens received by him yesterday are to be forwarded to a New York syndicate who are in search for just such a property and that it is more than likely that a deal on the same will be consummated consum-mated within a short time and that at no distant day a factory fac-tory for the handling and dressing of these ornamented stones will be established at Grand Junction Colo which is not far distant from the onyx deposits Robert A Kirker a gentleman well posted in the value of gems of various kinds and who is familiar with the art of lapidary has a very interesting communication in the Grand Junction News from which we make the following fol-lowing excerpt Until polished the precious gem has no splendor Although the lapidary industry and stonecutting methods have a history older than our civilization little is known here in our country of the character char-acter of machinery in use the value the demand and the purposes of the products from agate onyx chalcedony I jasper etc 1 The broad statement and challenge that we have a superior quality of raw products of agate onyx jasper etc that are moe beautiful in a great variety va-riety of colors found in the greatest quantity without flaws or imperfections imperfec-tions than can be produced by any other lapidary locality or manufacturing manufac-turing site now established in the Old World or in America has been proven by investigation to be true The value of establishing lapidary works here or at Grand Junction maybe may-be seen or understood by analogy in these facts That most all of the raw products as well also the suitable and tested i rii j < > < grindstones abrasive and polishing materials are found upon and in the vicinity of the l2SOacre tract at and near Agate switch in Grand county Utah on the R G w railway That they can be mined and produced pro-duced cheaply and that cheap transportation trans-portation is assured That we will not be to the expensive expen-sive operation of boiling in oil and acids to intensify or brighten the colors col-ors of any of our agates onyx chalcedony chal-cedony or jaspers which is now done altogether at Oberstein Idar and Het stein in Germany and to a certain extent ex-tent in the Ural mountains at Elkath erinbourg Russia THEY TOOK IN EUREKA The Visitors Highly Pleased With This Magnificent Camp Last Sunday E H Airls C D Gardiner John Heimrich W S Brown E G TVoolley E L Sheets W C B Allen and W R Wallace were in Eureka and while there they examined the underground under-ground workings of several of the great producers of this camp including the BullionBeck and the Eureka Hill To say that they were more than pleased pleas-ed with what they saw in these properties proper-ties would be putting it mild as they were delighted and astonished at the mammoth ore bodies exposed in these magnificent wealth producers According to one of the party the lower workings of the BullionBeck is in one of those great ore chutes that enabled the company to paS dividends of 100000 I a month during several months of last year and from one of which 600000 alone was taken The Eureka Hill also ac coiding to our Informant Is showing up in splendid shape and in and about this property and its deoared Its regular monthly dividend of twelve and onehalf cents a share or twentyfive thousand dollars payable on the 20th of this month It is beCieved that at this meeting arrangements would be made for the enlarging of the Mercur mill but the Herald is authorized to make the state I ment that the process for the treatment treat-ment of Mercur ores had beenso much improved of late that the capacity of the mill had been increased by fifty tons without the addition of any more machinery This in itself will be good news to Mercur stockholders as it in all probability means larger dividends without the incurring of any more expense Mr Dern with his wife and daughters daught-ers will leave for Europe next week Monday it being his intention to be absent ab-sent for four or five months Upon his return the consideration of the subject of a new mill for the mine will doubtless be taken up Messrs Dern Heimrich and Brown will go out to the mine this morning TIlE hOGAN PUMP It is Working
