Show REDHEADED AND FRECKLED I II A Boy Who 1 Bound to Make His Marls in the World On account of the destructive fires at Cripple Creek Arapahoe county has come into possession of one little redheaded beaded waif who is now being cared for in the county hospital till some permanent pr manent home can be provided for him He is known as Phoenix because something suggestive In the vividness of his hair and in the circumstances of his acquisition by the county He is a boy six weeks old whose parents are not known and whose start in life ha not been most propitious Yesterday morning a woman drove up to the county court house in a carriage car-riage and alighted with a boy in her arms She sought the office of the chairman of the county commissioners Clerk Steele was there and to him the woman related the story of the waif She was a handsome woman with dark hair and eyes Her name she gave a Mrs Annie Lewis and explained that she was a widow She had been living in Cripple Creek where she owned property but this had been destroyed and she had been compelled t come to Denver to get employment This morning after the fire Mrs Lewis said she found the redhaired baby upon her front door step The little lit-tle fellow was clothed warmly but very plainly and there was nothing of the aristocratic in his general appearance He was very very redheaded and his j face was covered with freckles and he was altogether as unpromising a I bit of babyhood as could be seen in the town Nevertheless Mrs Lewis took him in and cared for him She had not been damaged by the first fire and she concluded she would keep the baby as long a she could The boy got along finely for the short interval in which Mrs Lewis could care for him and he gave evidence of being a good natured infant who would cause little trouble Then came the second fire and Mrs Lewis home went with other things and she was compelled to flee with the redhaired baby leaving most of her goods and furniture to burn She stayed in the camp two days and then came to Denver with the baby Here she went to some charitable women and asked what she could do with i I They sent her to > the county commissioners commis-sioners with an Indorsement of Mrs Lewis Phoenix was given into the care of < the county hospital where he will remain until the scarlet fever unt < which now prevails at the state home for dependent children has been eradicated II erad-icated so that it will be safe to admit I new comersDenver Republican |
