Show A SPAXISH DEMAND FOR VAn j imparciale of Madrid is seemingly anxious l that Spain should go to war with the United States It says that the United States intead to wear out the patience of Spain or themselves and declare war and that it is preferable to hasten the event as the inferiority of Spain will increase with time That is to be taken for just what it is worth the opinion of a Spanish newspaper news-paper though it must not be forgotten newspapers in Europe have more influence in-fluence than in America In Spain public pub-lic opinion is court opinion and not what the people demand I It is not at ail unlikely that the Spanish people would welcome a declaration t decla-ration of war against the United States for they are a proud and brave I people and have a history as a great nation What could they expect to gain by a war They would certainly lose Cuba and in the end be themselves defeated though it would be more than a holiday task for this country I to defeat them I The American people want no war I with Spain though they would like to see Cuba free and would cheerfully stand by the government in any action it might take looking to a recognition of Cuban belligerency or even a recognition of Cuban independence The Spanish government gov-ernment is not courting trouble at this time and its compliance with the request of < the United States to postpone post-pone the execution of the death sentence sen-tence upon American citizens engaged in the Competitor expedition until the views of this government respecting the application of their cases to the treaty of 1795 and the protocol of 1877 can be considered is evidence that > Spain is highly desirous of avoiding any rupture with this country and to do all in its power to continue friendly relations |
