county commissioners the county e assessor called attention to the fact that the mortgage roll would be com pltd this morning that the revenue law passed by the last session of the legislature did not provide for any notices no-tices to holders of mortgages to be and appea before the board of equalization and show cause why they should not pay taxes upon the same He asked i1 for authority to publish notice in all i three daily papers of the city for four of five consecutive days giving such notice r The suggestion was agreed to and the holders of mortgages will please take notice of the same lest they be taxed tlpon the mortgages aforesaid without e1ng allowed to nake proper deduc f > Ii > tions in certain cases where such are permlssable The law will permit a man to deduct his just debts from the property he has on hand DEPUTY CLERKS SALARY Christopherson ng resolution In the closing hours of the session yesterday yester-day which came very near passing the same being as follows Whereas Upon more thorough investigation inves-tigation of the duties and responsibilities i responsibil-ities I of the chief deputy < < in the Sheriffs Sher-iffs office and a careful consideration of tlid same It has been found that his duties are more arduous and his responsibilities re-sponsibilities greater than was at first supposed therefore be it Resolved That the salary of the chief deputy In the sheriffs office of Salt Lake county for and during the year 1896 shall be and the same is hereby fixed at 150 per month and that part of the resolution of May 2 1896 fixing salary of said chief deputy be and the sameis hereby rescinded Roberts seconded the resolution but Geddes loolced askance at him and called his attention to the fact that the chief deputy aforesaid was getting a pretty good salary right now Chris topherson made a plea for Clarke that he had been paid the same figure ever since he had been in the office and that it was hardly fair to cut him down inconsideration in-consideration of the fact that he had a great deal of responsibility in keeping keep-ing the accounts of the county which meant much Roberts said he vould withdraw his second to the resolution in order to look Into the matter and the resolution was accordingly laid over until the next meeting COUNTY SUPPLIES I Geddes called attention to the fact that the contract for furnishing supplies sup-plies for the various county offices had expired in March and that a new one should be let for the balance of the year He offered a resolution calling upon the clerk to ask the balance of the county officers to make a list of I what they would need in order that a bass for bids might be had which was agreed to DR WRIGHTS SALARY The bill of the county physician corning corn-ing on for payment reminded the selectmen select-men they had not as yet fixed his salary sal-ary whereupon Mr Roberts moved the same be fixed at S2000 per year j beginning January 41896 which motion was adopted without debate DIRECTORv The selectmen decided that a directory directo-ry of the state and county offices on the south side of the building would be a good thing and save many inquiries and a design by Charles Peterson being submitted sub-mitted at a cost of not exceeding 25 the same was adopted ELECTRIC FRANCHISE The franchise of the Cottonwood Water Power and Electric company which was asked for at the last meeting meet-ing came up on a ready made resolution resolu-tion resolving that to the company its heirs and assigns there should be granted I grant-ed a franchise for the term of fifty I years and that It and its heirs and assigns as-signs should have the right to charge I 14 cents i er hour for the use of 16 candle power incandescent lamps and 515 per month for arc lights all night then came up Geddes looked over his glasses and said he believed that 15 was too much and that he should vote J I emphatically and vigorously against any such proposition There was an attempt made to carried his point and the case was referred re-ferred to the Toad committee to investigate II investi-gate and make a report at the next meeting I MILITIA ENROLLMENT I Assessor Lynch called attention to the fact that under the new code we would have to again poll the able bodied men I in the country who were liable to military mili-tary duty I What again queried Geddes Yes sir The law says that the expense said Geddes and the motion carried MR JOSEPH APPEARS Surveyor Joseph was brought to the surface by the submission of a report and a map concerning the opening of Fifth East street from Twelfth to Thirteenth Thir-teenth South recommending the securing secur-ing of land and a deed to the same from the owners etc After some discussion the matter was referred to the road committee to go and investigate The survey was adopted after considerable considera-ble discussion I Mr Joseph then called attention to II the bad condition of Eleventh South street from Fifth to Ninth East and i suggested as the city owns onehalf of the same the city council be Invited to confer with the road committee and the surveyor as concerns action to be taken I tak-en which was agreed to and the county olerk will notify the city recorder of the action of the board AN ALLEGED NUISANCE Parties living in the vicinity of Eleventh Elev-enth South and State streets called attention at-tention to an alleged nuisance In the shape of several wagons belonging to a man named Bird which he the said Bird permits and allows to stand in the street all night to the danger of passing vehicles It was first decided to refer the matter to the sheriff but afterwards the board arrived at the I conclusion that the sheriff had all he could attend to and so the clerk was instructed in-structed to call the attention of the street supervisor to the case and ask him to take the subject up and end it STREET SPRINKLING W H Lyon and John Birch applied for the contract to sprinkle State street the latter offering to take the I job at 350 per day and do and perform I ail and singular the wet duties of the place to the total allayment of the dust and the satisfaction c1l the board The I applications were filed TREE SPRAYING Julian P Kirke and Nephi Howcroft endorsed by the fruit tree inspector asked the court for permission to spray their own trees The requests were both filed as neither was
