Show Prices Since January Washington April 17 Referring to the letter addressed to him by Secre tar Morton under date April 1 directing an investigation into the cause of the rise of beef Dr Salmon chief of the bureau of animal industry indus-try has presented to the secretary < brief statement as to the prices in the Chicago market of dressed beef and shipping steers since January 1 1895 This statement shows the extremes of prices for this class of cattle to have I been for January 4 to o2o for February Feb-ruary 5410 t 550 for Starch 460 to 620 for first half April 475 to 6 Commentng of these figures Dr Salmon Sal-mon says These prices show that cattle on foot are approaching paying figures for growers and for feeders But they 1 do not warrant any such sensational I rise in the price of dressed beef to butchers by the great slaughtering I establishments nor a advance such > as has been reported on the part of the reti dealers in meat to consumers con-sumers A normal rise in the wholesale whole-sale price of dressed beef and In the retai prices should be only in propor proporI ion to the rise indicated for beef on foot I |
