Show TiE 3IAIX TOPIC But Little Else i Talked of In Frisco San Francisco April 17The Emanuel Eman-uel church murders are still the maIn topic for discussion in this city Notwithstanding the fact that one or two newspapers have tried and convicted con-victed Theodore Durrant of the frightful fright-ful crimes there seems to be a reaction reac-tion in favor of the accused young man The evidence so far produced against him is purely circumstantial and while the police say they have enough evidenqe to convict ten men It is doubtful if any jury would find Durrant guilty unless further conclusive conclu-sive proof is furnished The young medical student does not act like a guilty man and if he did commit the murders he is certainly a man of remarkable re-markable nerve He continues to assort as-sort his innocence and his whole demeanor de-meanor is that of a man confident of comes proving i when the proper time Ditlnt Want to Go The inquest over the remains ol Minnie Williams was continued today Durrant protested against being forced to attend the inquest and said his attorneys at-torneys had advised him that the I police had no right to make him goRe go-Re was told by the officers that If he refused to go they would take him by force and he finally reluctantly accompanied accom-panied them to the coroners ofilce Rev Dr Gibson was the first witness wit-ness called He said he had seen Miss Williams probably three times and was not intimate with Durrant Dr Vogel testified that Durrant came to the party at his house Friday night a few minutes before 10 oclock His I forehead was covered with perspiration perspira-tion but he saw no blood about his person Durrant asked permission to wash his hands before he entered the parlor Dr Vogel had never seen Miss Williams and Durrant together nor had never heard Miss Williams speak of the accused man The witness stated that his niece Miss Turner had told him that Durrant had asked her to allow al-low him to examine her about some complaint troubled with which she was Hail Mistreated Her A E Williams the father of the murdered mur-dered girl testified that she had told him that Durrant had not treated her right but she did not go into details He identified the purse found In Dur rants pocket as one he had given his daughter The testimony of the witnesses who claimed to have seen Durrant and Miss Williams entering the church early Friday Fri-day evening was rather vague They saw a man and woman entering the gate to the church yard The man wore a hat and coat resembling those worn by Durant but they were not positive posi-tive that Durrant was the man The testimony of other witnesses vas to the effect that they had never seen Durrant and Miss Williams together and had never heard them speak of each other The inquest will be resumed re-sumed tomorrow A Trail of Blood An afternoon paper publishes a sensational sen-sational story to the effect that a trail of blood has been found leading from the church to Durants house but the tale Is highly Improbable as since Friday Fri-day night there has been a heavy shower that would have obliterated traces of blood on the sidewalk The funeral services over the body of Miss Williams were held today in First Baptist church An immense crowd attended and hundreds of floral pieces were sent George King who says that he found D Gorge in the church the day Miss Lamflt was murdered was one of the jI pall bearers Rev Gibson was also In attendance Rev Boynton made a brief address referring to the murders and many ot the women present wept The body of Miss Lament was ship Bed to her home in Dillon Montana today in charge of her sister |
