Show WHEEL NOTES In most large cities of the United States it is customary to hold bicycle road races on Decoration Day The Salt Lake Cycle company will this year institute such an event in Salt I Lake and will endeavor to make it i the feature nf tho Vfar in nvflinf lit des They will offer prizes to the amount of 400 to 500 The first prize will be a Cleveland swell special bicycle bi-cycle worth 125 and other valuable trophies will be hung up The race will be ten miles and will in all probability be on the old Garfield Gar-field course There is an effort on foot however to induce tne Saitalr Ueacn people to build a bicycle path paralleling parallel-ing the Salt Lake Los Angeles railroad rail-road In the event of this being accomplished ac-complished the race will be run over that course instead of the old Garfield Gar-field It Is expected that there will be 150 entries at least to this race It will be a handicap race thereby giving all riders an opportunity of winning the first prize as riders who have heretofore hereto-fore never been in any races will have by reason ofthe handicap as good a chance of winning first prize as those I who are recognized as fast men Mr Emise says no pains will be spared to make this road race a grand success in every particular The Western Hardware company Saturday formally opened their new and spacious store The store was elegantly ele-gantly decorated throughout with flags and banners on which was printed the names of the different wheels they keep in stock The wheels themselves I were arranged in a very artistic manner man-ner showed off to very good advantage advan-tage and were decorated with the respective re-spective riding colors of each make of wheels Alongside of each wheel was arranged beautiful flowers ferns etc making a vety pretty and showy display dis-play In one part of the store they had arranged the different wheels which they had sold to customers throughout the city both last year and this with a ribbon attached on which was printed the names of the rider and owners of the wheels In the rear of the store they had along t a-long lunch counter arranged and a I corps of handsome voung ladles supplying sup-plying all those wio desired with sandwiches coffee cake etc Directly in the center of the store was erected a platform very artistically draped for a musicians stand from which Christensens full orchestra discoursed sweet strain of music to the vast throng that during the day were passing pass-ing in and out accepting of the hospitality hos-pitality exteraed to all visitors The full racing team and the entire force employed by the company were on hand explaining the merits of the dIfferent wheels showing people around generally and making all feel welcome Each one of the attachees had on the lapel of his coat the Sterns Smalley I riding colors which are orange and silver gray Altogether it was a notable no-table occasion among wheelmen Quite a feature of the reception was a quartette of colored boys who rendered ren-dered some very fine selections S SC The Social Wheel club will take a run out to Farmington this morning leaving the Templeton hotel at 9 a m sharp On reaching Farmingtcn dinner will be taken after which the return trip jo the city will be made All mem bers of the club are requested to be on hand S S S Prof Crystol the trainer at the new track at the Hot Springs says he will offer special Inducements to fat men who wish to reduce their weight The professor asks that Judge McNally i Chief of Police Pratt and Hon P H Lannan make a note of this He will not run them more than tenty miles a day for a starter S SC P W Madsen has taken the agency for the Gendrom wheel After looking over the market and doing a great deal of figuring as to the requirements necessary to produce speed in a bicycle George Teller has at last setled on the Rambler for his 1895 mount He perhaps remembers the phenominal work of Ziegler the California wonder last season and the remarkable time of Mr Edwards a few months ago when he made a ride on a Rambler fitted with G and J tires In one minute and thirtyfour and one fifth seconds He is well satisfied that while a man may have the necessary qualifications to make good time he must also have a wheel that will respond re-spond to his efforts George can be expected ex-pected to do some remarkable work this season |
