Show T11EIRLIVES DASHED OUT Three People Are Killed by a Runaway Trolley Car 1 TEN OTHERS ARE INJURED Frightened Passengers Leap J From the Car Had They Remained in the Car All i Trouble Would Have Been Averted j Avert-ed as the Rear Brake Would Have Held and Prevented Any Damage Six Attachments For AnT Such an Emergency I Jeansville Pa March 30Three persons were instantly killed two fatally fat-ally injured and ten others slightly hurt on the Leigh Traction company road by jumping from a runaway trolley trol-ley car on the mountain near here The dead are Mrs Watkin lams of Hazleton Mrs John E1 E rley of Beaver > Meadow and her 8yearold son Fatally injured Mrs James Evans of Coterain Mrs John Weir of Beaver Meadow Seriously wounded Watkhi Williams husband of the woman who was killed Maggie Herrity of Beaver Meadow Three children of r Evans Hannah Somers of Beaver Meadow Morris Hughes of Wilkesbarre All of the other persons who sustained sus-tained Injuries were able to walk home The accident was the worst in the history of the trolley roads in this vicinity and was due In part to a panic pan-ic among the passengers who crowded about the conductor and grlpman of the unmanageable car The disaster occurred on car No 20 As it passed onto the grade leading down the mountain Gripman Reltz applied the brake but the chain snapped He then threw the safety lever This refused to work and the terrified motorman sprang to the reverse rake hoping to control the car by the current The actions of the man and the speed of the car had by this time alarmed the passengers Falling to control < tiha car he shouted to Conductor Socks to apply the rear brake His shouts caused a panic and the passengers made a rush for the platform plat-form The car was going down the mountain at a mile a minute Conductor Socks appealed to the passengers pas-sengers to go back so he might apply the brake but was not heeded Mr Jackman of Hazleton and two other men endeavored to keep the women from throwing themselves from the car onto the rocks but were unable to do so Mrs Williams was the first to jump Her body struck a post breaking her back and causing instant death Mrs Early next flung herself off and was dashed to death She tried to save her boy but he shared the same fate The remaining passengers with one exception then jumped Mrs Evans was the only person to remain in the car with the exception of the motorman and conductor The car kept the track until the crossing at the foot of the Incline was reached Here it jumped the track and crashed into a telegraph pole The front of the car was stove in and a piece of board penetrated pen-etrated Mrs Evans side The screams of the frantic passengers as the car rushed down the mountain could be heard half a mile The residents of this part hastened to the scene of the accident and did allthey could to relieve re-lieve the sufferings Had the passengers passen-gers remained in the car the accident could have been averted as the rear brake would have held the car and prevented the runaway There are six attachments on each car provided for such an emergency but the conductor was wedged so closely against the dasher by the panicstricken women that he was unable to move his arms till the car had gotten beyond control The motorman and conductor were but slightly injured |
