Show WASHINGTONS BIRTHDAY I PUI EXERCISES HELD IN THE PUBS I I PUB-S LIC SCHOOLS YESTERDAY They Were All of the Same General Nature and All Were Interesting A Sample Programme Exercises In honor of Washingtons birthday were held at the public schools yesterday They were of the same general nature of course and all were Interesting At the Oquirrh school roms 1015 joined forces and gave in the upper I I ccrridor a very delightful programme to the many friends who had on the j same afternoon brought books for the I i school library I I No prosy essays nor long recitations had a place on the programme but stirring music patriotic decorations and colonial costumes were abundant The Anvil Chorus The Minuet and the Hoop Drill may be mentioned men-tioned as the most striking numbers of the afternoon although Miss Lily Pye and Lewis Sowles who each saga sag-a solo did very creditably The latter sang TentingTonight and was assisted as-sisted by the chorus of 50 voices and the song was made more effective by the presentation of a scene not unlike that of Valley Forge Several boys from the rooms of the Misses Caufileld and Miss Graham took part in this The picture represented soldiers in soiled uniforms with oldfashioned guns and swords lying down for the night The Anvil Chorus was first on the programme and was executed well for school children Besides the anvils and the voices there was an orchestra of several pieces Including the two pianos which were played by Lola Cochler and Lizzie Thomas Added to this was a band of boys and girls drilled in the use of dumb dells by Miss Scoville who greatly pleased the spectators by their grace and precision of movement The minuet was danced by 24 sand s-and girls under the direction of Miss Carney As they came down the steps leading to the floor preceded by Kenneth Ken-neth Crismon as George Washington onrl < 5nTn > i Case nq Martha Washinc ton they looked very stately indeed and they carried out the idea to the very end while Martha and George who were conducted by Master High Sharp to a small platform looked on as interested spectators of the beauti ful scene To Miss McKenzie belongs the credit of the beautiful hoop drill in which her girls did their work with a surprising facility George Soffe as messenger boy made quite a hit in the announcement of the arrival of the Washington party He read what he claimed to be a ele gram from Washington who stated his purpose in visiting the Oquirrh school on this particular day The mandolin club were costumed as gypsies and seated on the ground around their tent were very attractive attract-ive Jessie Weiner leading violinist was the central figure In this group The programme in full was as follows fol-lows Anvil Chorus Orchestra voices dumb bells and anvils by rooms 1015 The Minuet rooms 1415 Solo and chorus Speed the Republic Repub-lic solo by Lilly Pye Hoop drill sixteen girls room 13 Tableaux solo and chorus Tenting Tonight solo Lewis Sowles |
