Show THE LIGHTING CONTRACT VETO Tonight the city council will take under consideration Mayor Glendin nmgs veto of the street lighting contract con-tract The reasons urged for that veto were so many and so cogent they appealed so to reason and good judgment judg-ment that it is very hard to believe they will not have great weight and force with the members of the city council Heretofore in this matter they have shown themselves the champions cham-pions of the public welfare It is very much to be hoped that they will continue con-tinue to be such champions Had their attention been drawn to the facts set forth in the mayors message it is safe to assume they would never have agreed to and passed the present contract con-tract Knowing these facts now and being aware of public sentiment upon the matter it seems impossible that they will pass the contract over the veto If the electric light company can well afford to take the contractito light the streets for two years it can well afford af-ford to take it for one year That is avery a-very reasonable time and one to which no valid objection can be made To a two years contract there is the very valid objection < hat in less than a year there will be three wellequipped and responsible electric companies ready to bid on the street lighting And they will be prepared to put in bids much lower than the price provided for in the contract vetoed by Mayor Glendinning The people have a right to benefit by this competition and it is the plain duty of the city council as public servants ser-vants to see that it is secured to them There is nothing unreasonable in this request nor is any Injustice done the electric light company with which the contract is made We have referred to these matters because of their great importance and because it is a duty we owe the public I to watch out for its interest In another an-other part of this issue will be found a clear and calm statement by a citizen and taxpayer of the reasons why the city council should stand by the mayor on his veto It is worthy of every consideration con-sideration |
