Sen-atorial Qualities of the Salt Lake Lawyer Services at Chicago Also Merit wad Says Nebeker Aquila Nebeker president of the state senate has made an open declaration declara-tion on the senatorship Senator Nebeker believes that Judge Powers who is the Tribunes attorney will better than any other man be able to 4 quelL the storm the Tribune is raising in the east Hence he Is for Powers Mr Nebekers argument for his friend is a very cleverly worded document docu-ment I was given out at Judge Powers headquarters last evening I is a follows I shall give my vote I shall use my personal influence and exert all my energies en-ergies to cure the election of Judge O W Powers the United States senate sen-ate and these are my reasons Judge Powers is the logical candidate candi-date of thoe who have been advanced Xor the position He is the one man toward whom all argument point I we consider the matter on the score co availability he is the most available If we ask who under surrounding conditions con-ditions can do the most for Utah then answer conies back Judge O W Powers Pow-ers If we Inquire as to his capacity we are met by the unanimous response that no man is beater fitted I we reason from a partisan standpoint ye discover at once that he merits the reward re-ward In determining who should be elected we shall be blind if we do not recognize that there is a great storm brewing in the eaS and that many hands are being raised against Utah This is a time when we must act with the greatest wisdom and select a man who is not only capable but who is willing and able to set Utan rignt bo fore the nation And in the whole state where is the man who can do it better than Judge Powers POWERS STATE SAVER The very bulwark of statehood is being attacked by the bigot y of tho east it is not wise for us to rest insecurity in-security and close one eye to the 113111 which is manifestly ahead of us Our motives are being misinterpreted our actions are being misconstrued Public Pub-lic opinion must be corrected and there is no ran better equipped for this vcrk or who can accomplish it with greater certainty than Judge Powers But though these matters are important impor-tant and grave and must be considered consid-ered after all they are not the final things for us to look at We are in danger of forgetting the main issue the paramount question Much is being said abot our sending a representative of the business interests to the senate and little has been said about the great issue which is yet to be fought out We hear men discussing expansion expan-sion and imperialism and we are In danger of sidetracking the great question ques-tion concerning the freis and unlimited coinage o silver That question must be solved in the interest of the masses or the people will be crushed by the money power The banner ot that S oal must be held high or cur boasted liberties will become a sham Utah I should add another voice in the senate I in hphnJf of suffermcr humanity Utah r should not only send another vote to f the United States senate in favor of manhood and against the domination of money but she should send an orator a skilled debater an organizer and a fighter from away back Ths gold standard has seure1 l control of the senate and we need a man from this i state upon the floor of confess competent compe-tent to cope with the strongest attorneys attor-neys of the mrney power What maT can better help our cause than O W Powers Who ca wield an inHuene more note > i Who has more completely com-pletely than be proved his capacity for such a trust WORKED AT CHICAGO I We sent him to the Chicago convention conven-tion in 1896 and I have the word of one 1 of his opponents who generously says that no delegate from any state had more influence than he I was he who brought order out of chaos He formulated for-mulated the plan upon which the silver forces were organized I have at hand an extract from the S1 Louis Globe Democrat of July 12 1S96 which says that Judge Powers formulated the plan upon which the silver forces were organized and it speaks in high terms of its perfect work In that same convention con-vention Judge Powers attracted the attention at-tention of the whole country by his speech nominating Senator Daniel for vice president But his labors for the silver cause did not begin at that convention i 9 i con-vention He advanced silver a the i paramount issue long prior to that He is a pioneer of the cause and one of I the most effective workers in the country coun-try His services for bimetallism have been iSecognized by Bryan and by all the silver leaders Unaided by the power of official position occupying the place of a private citizen with no aid except his personal ability he ha become p be-come a leader of the Democratic party r of national reputation I he has been able to do that as a citizen give him the senatorship and the power of office of-fice and no man can estimate the good he can accomplish I have known Judge Powers intimately mately since we were in the legislature I in 1894 I can vouch for his honesty his ability his loyalty to any cause he I espouses and hIs sterling qualities He I I I has reached ripe years He will represent rep-resent all the people of the state in a satisfactory manner I know the man 1 through and through and I know whereof I speak What has been his course here in Utah He has always been true He is outspoken and people know where to find him I will be a mistake to defeat him it will he a victory vic-tory for silver to elect him Send him to Washington and the peoples cause will have a strong champion Through him Utah will make her influence felt and he will do a much as any one man can do to set Utah right before I the world I believe he will be r word beleve wi elected J r He is the logical v candidate = |
