Show I Logan Schools I The Logan City schcols are in excellent excel-lent running order with Professor Air A-ir Merrill as superintendent The board of education has secured the services of an efficient corps of teachers teach-ers Professor Alexander Lewis and Miss Susie Gates teach music In all the schools The zeal of the city superintendent and teachers is commendable Every effort is being made to advance the interests I in-terests of education I Superintendent Merrill Principals Owen and Thomas and Mr Stewart visited Salt Lake schools last week Miss Rose Jones read a paper on Sense Training at the last teachers meeting Clerk Thain presented the teachers contracts last Tuesday Some objected ob-jected to signing them because of a clause which provides that the teacher shall not marry during the school year Mr Daines and Mr Lamb of the county schools visited the Woodruff Thursday and expressed surprise at the excellency of the work being done Quite a number of nonresident pupils pu-pils are enrolled Parents recognize the high standard of the schools and wish their children to attend Columbus day Oct 12 was duly observed ob-served in most of the schools The exercises I ex-ercises in Miss Howells room were very interesting and Instructive The small percentage ofboys in attendance at-tendance shows they are not given an equal chance with the girls but are kept out to assist their parents In room 7 at the Woodruff the percentage of boys is less than 16 23 and in all of tho schools it falls very low Parents should remedy this and give the boys a how 1 The Branch Normal Several now stuciEints and some who were here las l ycur entered scCiool i last week One hundred and thirty arenow enioll dAs d-As a result of the unfavorable weather weath-er few sports have been indulged in I onthe campus this weak Instructor Anderson has begun to train the students In chorus singing He intends to organize a student orchestra or-chestra soon Electric bells are being placed in the various class rooms by Mr Tipton The committee on amusements for the athletic association has anhounced a ball for Friday night The Students society held its first meeting for this year last Friday night Mr Bennlon addressed tho students and Mr Anderson introduced our new piano to the public Besides these several sev-eral of the students had parts on the programme The meeting was well attended at-tended L D S College The attendance at the college shows I a marked Increase over that of the previous pre-vious year The students in the night school number seventythree a larger registration than that of the whole of last year Professor Willard Done formerly president of the L D S college visited vis-ited the school Friday He was present at the opening xorl1so3 and in the afternoon af-ternoon addressed the studonts in the general theological meeting The general meetings held Friday afternoons af-ternoons promises to be a great success suc-cess this year An interesting pro grammeis prepared and the meeting forms an appropriate ending of the week One of the important features of the college is the commercial law class Here the principles of law governing business transactions are discussed and at intervals during the year mock trials are carried on where aueistions arising among the bookkeeping students j stu-dents in their dealings with one anther an-ther are settled A great many of I the young business men of the city are members of the class and much interest I inter-est and enthusiasm are shown This class is free to all business men On account of the large number of students taking higher English grammar gram-mar and commercial arithmetic it has become necessary to divide these two classes into sections As many students stu-dents have entered since the conference confer-ence vacation one of the sections of each class will take the course from the beginning These classes will be organized Oct 23 one week from Monday Mon-day Agricultural College Professor and Mrs Foster returned I Friday from a two weeks lecture tour among the farmers Professor W S Langton who won considerable fame in football with a Chicago university team this summer is i now training the college team Some interesting games are in prospect Mrs Rose of Idolib is visiting her daughter a member of the freshman class Chapel exercises are now held in the I large auditorium the small chapel not coating all the students Saturday evening the faculty gave a reception in the gymnasium to the students stu-dents The programme was under the direction of Messrs Foster and Snt > wand w-and Miss Moench Dancing was the feature of the evening At 11 oclock light refreshments were served Everything is moving smoothly and quietly Classes have never been BO well organized and work has never begun more earnestly Two new teachers for tho preparatory students make possible smaller sections of classes and ensure better and more thorough work |
