Show i OOtI3J otbiJ COIINELLS COlORS GO DOWN CHICAGO UNIVERSITY WINS BY x SCORE OF 17 TO 6 Cornells Work Was > Below the Average Aver-age Indians Beat Old Pennsylvania Pennsyl-vania Chicago Oct 1 For the first time since 1S94 when Michigan beat Cornell at Detroit a strong eastern eleven was today decisively defeated by a western team Cornell university and the University Uni-versity of Chicago elevens met on Marshall Mar-shall field Chicago winning by a score of 17 to 6 Full halves of thirtyfive minutes were played This fact was in Chicagos favor the maroon player being evidently in better condition than their eastern opponents who weakened perceptibly toward the close of the second sec-ond half The result was a surprise even to Chicagos strongest adherents a the western team was without Captain Cap-tain Kennedy who was laid out in the Notre Dame game of two weeks ago In this respect did Cornell show superiority su-periority and that wag tackling The Cornell backs and ends seldom failed to nail their man hard and sure The Chicago ends were more uncertain uncer-tain and high in their tackling but their work was effective enough to prevent any material gains from end runs and Cornell in consequence was often forced to punt Cornell scored her only touchdown in the first half by good hard line bucking In the line where the easterners were expected to show the greatest superiority Chicago did the better work and in the second I half the Cornell men were played off their feet Staker tearing through time and again for more than the distance I was straight hard football throughout and so fierce that four of Cornells men Starbuck Walbridge Caldwell and Payne er compelled to retire in the second half Few trick plays were attempted and only two were successful Staker making twenty I two ards on a delayed pass and Hoy fifteen yards on a double pass This latter play was tried twice afterwards by Chicago but Right End Cross nailed his man for a loss cacTi time Chicago outclassed Cornell in the quickness in which the ball was put into play and also displayed more effective ef-fective interference The interference of Cornell when the backs attempted to circle the ends was toa compact and for this reason was often put out of the I play altogether by the ends and backs who tore i to pieces some time before the ball was fairly started The punting on both sides was decidedly I de-cidedly off color particularly in the first half First Young who did most of the kicking for Cornell kicked the ball into his own line and this ulti ma ted in a touchdown for Chicago Chicago scored another touchdown and kicked a goal Jn the second half I Final score Chicago 17 Cornell 6 |
