Show EA THOF DON CORAl I Gallant Utah Volunteer Succumbs to Disease AFTER A LONG ILLNESS + I DISEASE CONTRACTED w HTTa PIGHTING THE FILIPINOS t I k 3 I H I j Thought That He Was Recovering i as He Was Able to Appear On the I Street DSath Occuired at Provo Yesterday Morning Sketch II oft of-t Deceased I I 1 > 1 J i Special c r esiidiisncej J Proyo Get 1L Don R Coray one of l the returned volunteers t of1 battery B i ha laid down his life as a result of his I servica in the Philippine islands He e died at 4r oclock this irornlng at the home of Mrs W D Alexander a slate sla-te In this city t The deceased took elclc with dysentery dysen-tery while at the front fighting Filipinos Fili-pinos some time In April but he continued con-tinued with his battery loath to leave the firing line until in JuneiyhertIi0 4 dl5 IIc DON K CORAY was ordered to the hospital at Manila He was still sick when the volunteers left for home but not so bad that it was believed necessary to leave him behind The long sea voyage however had avery a-very debilitating effect and upon reaching San Francisco Mr Coray was at once conveyed to the hospital with the hope that the mountain air might be better for him than the medicine and nursing on the coast the sick soldier sol-dier was conveyed to Salt Lake where he again entered the hospital and about a month ago came back to his boyhood home Life seemed dear to him here surrounded by family and friends and he had hopes of a speedy recovery He was apparently improving improv-ing and just before the storm was seen about the streets But last Wednesday he took suddenly worse and sank rapidly rap-idly His wife was yesterday telegraphed tele-graphed to leave her school at Helper and she hastened to her husbands death bed arriving here a few hours before he breathed his last Biographical Sketch Don Rathbon Cora was born at this city on Sept 20 1864 and received his early education in the schools in this city He then went to live with Captain Cap-tain Hoooer In Salt Lake City where he spent his earl manhood and made many friends He removed to Ogden in 1888 accepting a position as bookkeeper book-keeper for D H Peery He was an expert accountant and filled the position posi-tion with entire satisfaction to his employer em-ployer When the financial boom was on in Provo he came to this city and engaged in the real estate business amassing a neat fortune which was afterwaids lost through speculation In August 1893 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Hjslop When the call came for volunteers he enlisted as a private in battery A His merit soon won for him the position posi-tion of quartermaster which he filled capably He was one at the modt popular popu-lar men in the batteries and his death will be sincerely mourned by his comrades com-rades His wife and a little daughter survive him besides an aged father once a scribe of the Prophet Joseph Smith six brothers and four sisters The funeral will take place at the resIdence res-idence of W D Alexander just west of the Roberts hotel at 2 oclock Sunday afternoon Captain Wedgwood is anxious anx-ious that as many comrades of the batteries bat-teries as possible be in attendance It is also recuested that members of the G A R be present |
