Show KIDS WANTED MORE PAY I Western Union Manager Headed Off 2 Strike i 1 An incipient strike of Western Union messenger boys which threatens to demoralize de-moralize the office for a few days was knocked in the head on Thursday by Manager Demareet There might have been demoralization throughout the business part of town had the young I sters succeeded in perfecting arrangements arrange-ments But as one of the boys expressed it I the knockers told Demarest and he fired three of the kids That ended matters and harmony now prevails However as the cause of the trouble is not removed difficulties may break out again You se it was dis way said one cxf the boys Were only getting 11 cents foe delivering telegrams and we want I 2 cents One cent and a half aint enough 0 course if de graft was strong dat would be all right but it is awful poor since the cold weather commenced But it wasnt us messengers what struck It was the telegraph kids Who is gittin 1 cent and a half Thursday afternoon we held a meeting down I around the corner from Smiths drugstore drug-store and one of the telegraph kids said to de others We must have 2 I cents a message says he Its getting I cold and people is grUmpy and they dont give up the change as like dey was used to But the other telegraph kids they I wouldnt strike they was afraid of j I their jobs We was all willin we messengers to stand with them and strike too but they didnt have the nerve The night clerk heard of the coming trouble So when he left in the morning morn-ing he put a note on the managers desk explaining the situation When Mr Demarest came down in the morn Jng he called three of the boys Larsen Brooks and Hines and told them that the Western Union Telegraph company could get along without their services though it might cripple it for a few days Three new boys were put to I work on Friday |
