Show MADE A BIG SAVING I Street Sprinkling Department Nets S r93528 l S EXTRA WORK ALSO DONE 5 I FIGURES PREP R D BY REPUBLICAN REPUB-LICAN CANDIDATE 4 Albert Reiser Who Aspires to Audit I orship Gets Up Statement of Expense Ex-pense For Street Sprinkling In 1899 Showing a Notable Decrease In CostCredit Due Patrick I In view of the charges of extravagance extrava-gance 011 the part of the Democratic city council made by the Hannaltes in their platform some figures on the single department of street sprinkling will be interesting Strangely enough I these figures were prepared by Albert I S Reiser chief cleric in the ivaitermas ters office and candidate for auditor on the Republican ticket It is therefore reasonably fair to presume that the picture is not any more roseate in hue than the actual conditions warrant Candidate Reisers Figures At the request of Councilman Patrick Pat-rick who may be called the father of the city sprinkling cart Mr Relser prepared a schedule showing what the sprinkling cost in 1S98 and what it c tin t-in 1899 The season is now practically over In fact because of the rains of I the past few days it is altogether unlikely likely that any morn sminklimr 4ll be rcc sary for this year According to Mr Reisers figures it cost 2236408 to sprinkle the city last year This year it has cost only 14 42880 The saving it will be seen is nearly 8000 or in exact figures it is 793528 This isnt half the story Mr Reiser in a little foot note to his schedule says There are 128 blocks now being sprinkled in addition to those sprinkled in 1898 The Cost of these blocks at the rate paid Heath Preece in 1898 106 per block per week would be 13568 per week or 58795 per month Nearly Pays For Carts The saving for the season of 1899 alone is almost enough to pay the cost of the citys sprinkling carts In addition the money has been distributed among the workingmen of Salt Lake The men who have teams on which they depend for a living have been given employment employ-ment and many a little home that might otherwise have known want has been plentifully supplied with the necessaries nec-essaries of life As chairman of the sprinkling committee com-mittee Mr Patrick has given a large share of his time and attention to the work He has personally investigated petitions to have streets sprinkled and in many cases has ordered the work done before a petition was presented 1m addition to trie extra blocks mentioned men-tioned above Mr Patrick has seen to it that alleys and narrow side streets that hardly knew how a drop of water felt have been gone over time aftertime after-time by the citys carts If the affairs of the only Republican department of the city the engineers I had been managed with the same economy econ-omy and farsightedness that has been shown in the conduct of the sprinkling department it is believed the citys treasury would be far more bountifully supplied with cash than at the present writing |
