Show A LOSS TO UTAH The Territorial Reform School Burned to the Ground 1 Ogden was visited with a destructive fire yesterday in which the magnificent building the Territorial Reform school Was destroyed The fire was discovered about 830 in the morning by Charles Barton a son of the superintendent of the institution Joseph Barton Ho had just finished his breakfastthe balance were yet at the tableand was on his way I 4 yjto his room to get ready for his work I down town when ho detected the smell of smoke He called his fathers attention and both proceeded to the upper story of ¼ the building and pushing open a door leading lead-ing to the garret the blaze was lound to I be situated in the roof near the large chimney I Mr Barton called for the lawn hose j I Which was all that could be had around the building and in too meantime he gave the alarm to the fire department Mr Barton then returned to the garret and began fighting the fire with what facilities he had The flames spread very rapidly but be stood at his post until he became entirely en-tirely exhausted with the curling smoke By this time the department had arrived and the men carried him to the fresh air when he soon revived The firemen made a quick response after the alarm was sent in but they were powerless so to speak to do anything i i > > with the chemical engine and there was not sufficient hose in the wagon to reach from the nearest j hydrant so it necessitated makinir a second I trip for more hose and the steamer By the time they bad again reached the scene ot destruction it was evident that the < building was docmed as the roof was entirely wrapt in flames Two lines of j hose were stretched from the corner of Monroe and Twentieth street The 1 pressure of water was not heavy enough produce suibcient force and the steamer was set in motion which soon had two v streams pouring on the flames And in I the meantime another line of hose was run to the hydrant on the corner of Quincy j and Twentieth street thus making over b 5000 feet in action or all that the aepart meet possesses The fire had gained such headway the gable ends on the south portion por-tion of the building began falling and as J the firemen worked within the dangerous 5 walls each fell as they became sufficiently burned All the firemen could do was to sucdue the flames in portions of the building build-Ing to allow the large force of volunteers to save as much of the contents as possible Tbeboys fought bravely butunder many disadvantages dis-advantages The steamer gave out after it bad been run but a few moments and for awhile a-while they vere without ladders to reach the upper windows The ladders that belong be-long to the department have been in use for many years having been manipulated by the old volunteer company and for some time past they have not been put into practical prac-tical use because of their dangerous condition condi-tion although always being held in reserve re-serve They were brought to the scene however and under the direction of Chief Rhodes good work was done with them It was 130 before the firemen bad the flames entirely subdued and all that remains re-mains of the building which cost 00000 besides the furniture that was inside only a small portion of whch was saved is the smoked walls Some of the firemen were quite badly burned But very few of the contents of the building were saved other than bedding etc The loss is estimated at about 50OOJ and the structure was Insured in-sured through the Utah Loan and Trust company for 30000 in the California Insur anon company of San Francisco and reinsured re-insured for 15000 in the Firemens Fund Insurance company The fire originated from sparks from the flue which ignited the dry shingles The inmates which number fortynine boys and six girls were in the building at the time and were soon collected together andclosely guarded sonone of them are reported as having escaped The building was built in 1SS9 and consisted con-sisted of four floors and a basement On the first floor were the offices and living rooms the second floor was made up into class rooms and the third and fourth into dormitories The directors some time ago decided to take steps for the building of an annex The board of directors held a meeting yesterday afternoon and it was decided to rebuild the institution as soon as possible The insurance companies have telegraphed that anadjuster will be here Friday morning morn-ing The standing walls will be examined toy three experts and if they are found in a suitable condition they will be used in rebuilding The opinion seems to prevail that the walls will have to be torn down The superintendent of the Ogden Military Mili-tary academy donated the use of that institution in-stitution for the inmates for a few weeks which was accepted and the unruly youngsters were taken there last evening |
