Show Commencement at Harvard BOSTON June 24The weather for the commencement day at Harvard was perfect and the timehonored observances of the I day were carried out with the same spirit and precision as in former years Governor I Russell and Lieutenant Governor Tale and I members of the governors staff were escorted es-corted from Boston by the National Lancers reaching Massachusefts ball at 10 oclock where President Etiott was in waiting to receive them Among the other I invited guests were Chief Justice Fuller of the United btates supreme court Within the theatre was gathered a brilliant audience aud-ience which always assembles to applaud the graduates and listen t the orations of II their representatives The following alumni officers were elected for the ensuing year President I I Leverett Saltonstall of Newton vice presidents HoraceDavis of San Francisco Robert T Lincoln of Chicago Henry S Hindekoper of Philadelphia treasurer S Lathrop Thorndyke of Cambridge secretary secre-tary Henry Parkham of Boston I At the alumni dinner toni ht President Eliot Governor Russell and Chief Justice Fuller delivered addresses The latter I spoke of tbe wisdom of the framers of the t constitution in declining t confer political power upon the judiciary department of the United States Nothing ha done more t commend that department to tho confidence confi-dence and respect of the people than the scrupulous abstinence from purely political politi-cal questions c questons |
