Show STEWART TO KNOX I The Silver Champion Writes A other Article TH EXCOMPTROLLERS STAND He Avoids the Main Question I the Gold Supply Sup-ply Sufficient The Senator I Seeking More Scalps Special THE HKRALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YORK June 24Here Is a portion porton of Senator William M Stewarts Viia Stewats reply t John J Knoxs argument which was pub lished in todays Examiner Your gold monometalist avoids the issue I invited him to that there prove is gold enough and end the controversy He does not allude to that question At the te time silver was demonetized there was not too much gold and silver coin to sustain sustan business and the credit of the commercial world During the last fifeeen years credit and business haveJ expanded out of all proportion to the supply of gold coin The most industrious and intelligent atatis ticans maintain there has been no increase in the amount of gold coin in the commercial commer-cial world in the last eighteen years The events of the last twelve months have revealed re-vealed the fact that the supply of gold com is altogether Inadequate Before tha failure of the Barn s the commercial world was ignorant of the meagre supply of gold Confidence supplied the place of coin credit and business expanded The knowledge of the want of coin has destroyed de-stroyed confidence The coin of ultimate redemption must be increased or confidence cannot be restored no more gold can be obtained the supply irom th mines must continue to decline The great gold fields of California and Australia are exhausted and the lar larger part of the supply now comes from silver mines in connection with the white metal I silver i rejected and silver mining stopped more than onehalf of the supply of toe supply of gold will ba cut off A gold standard means inevitable and continued contraction The world must have more money of ultimate redemp tion than can be supplied with gold or bankruptcy and a fall in prices are inevitable inevit-able It is idle for the advocate of the gold standard to discuss the money question unless he can show there is sufficient gold to supply the legitimate demands for money The silver miners will be satisfied with free coinage they do not ask the government gov-ernment to buy their silver they have no more right to do so than the farmer or manufacturer ha to demand the government ment shall buy the commodity he produces The gold advocate will be told not to trouble trou-ble himself about the goose that lays the golden egg for the silver miners This discussion is idle unless the advocate of gold will attempt to show there is gold enough for use a money I he can estab lish that fact the discussion ends i he cannot prove them is gold enough I will then discuss with him bow to supply the deficiency I the gold advocate who answered an-swered my last communication is unable 01 unwilling to discuss the question whether or not there is gold enough for the money of ultimate redemption I desire some other adversary who i both abla and willing t meet the issue desire information and am open to conviction Coinage or the Standard Silver Dollar WASHINGTON June 24Itis stated on the best of authority that
