Show GOY STONES VISIT The Distinguished Hissourian Spends Two Days Here He Talks of Free Trade The Governor Believes in Free Coinage The Statehood Question Salt Lake has had the honor of entertaining enter-taining for two days Governor William J Stone of Jefferson Missouri The distinguished dis-tinguished gentleman arrived here on Sunday in a private car placed at his disposal dis-posal by President Jeffrey of the Denver Rio Grande accompanied by Mrs Stone his niece Miss Katherine Turner of Columbia Mo Misses Mabel and Mildred Stone and Kimborough Stone The party stopped at the Templeton On Sunday the party went to the tabernacle to the fort and to other places of interest in the city and yesterday moraine the governor visited the gubernatorial guber-natorial chambers and chatted with Act ing Governor Richards for about two hours In the afternoon the private car was hitched to the Salt Lake di Los Angeles An-geles train and the party taken to Saltair where they enjoyed some fine bathing in the surf At 750 last evening the car was hitched to the Rio Grande express and the party left Zion When seen by a reporter re-porter last evening just before the train started the governor was entertaining Judge Anderson with whom he was acquainted ac-quainted in the auld lane syne Colonel Lett and some other prominent Democrats but stopped long enough to give his opinion on several important matters I have seen it stated said the interviewer inter-viewer that you are a free trader Does this mean that you would even go farther than a revenue tariff In principle I believe absolutely in the principles of free trade when carried to their logical conclusion Of course the Democratic party is pledged only for a revenue tariff and that perhaps is as far as ve will get for some time as a policy of absolute free trade brings up the question of direct taxation and that is still a vexing question I believe the Democratic party will make sweeping reductions re-ductions in the present tariff as it was elected on a platform which pledges a tariff for revenue only However as Mr Cleveland has gone completely behind be-hind the platform on the silver question ques-tion he may not feel so desirous clinging to the letter of it now Mr Cleveland however is a man of backbone back-bone and a he announced a determination determina-tion to take off the tariff he is likely to do i So determined a man is he that he is likely to veto any measure on the silver question that dots not unconditionally repeal the Sherman law As for myself 1 believe iu the unlimited coinage of silver ver at the ratio of 16 to 1 but I cannot help admiring his determination What are your views on statehood for Utah was the next question I voted for statehood when in Congress Con-gress and on occasion would do so again as I can give no reason why your fair territory ter-ritory should not be given what must appear ap-pear as her rights What do you think of Salt Lake I think it is one of the most beautiful spots I have seen The lake is of especial advantage and will attract a great many as soon as it becomes known |
