Show THE SUMMER SCHOOLTeachers 11 SCHOOL-Teachers Enter Upon Their Last < Weeks Work I < t Professor Andrews Talks Upon Civil Government I crnmOntDr White on tlie Art of Teaching The opening of the summer school for the third and lost week was auspicious The enrollment has increased to 250 The devotional exercises were conducted by Dr White the teachers joining heartily heart-ily in the singing Professor Andrews continued his work in civil government combined with United States history He reviewed the following in their relation re-lation to the slavery question FirstThe introduction of twenty slaves in 1919 SecondThe compromise made In the constitutional convention whereby taxation tax-ation and representation in Congress was to be based in part upon the slave populations of the different states ThirdThe Missouri compromise FourthThe Omnibus bill or the compromise com-promise of 1850 FifthThe Charleston convention and the question of slavery SixthTne secession of the southern states SeventhThe rebellion and its result I Slavery abolished I Eighth State sovereignty I In Dr Whites last lecture he pronounced pro-nounced the art of teaching the greatest among the arts The greatest teacher is the one who did the greatest good for the human raceand that is Christ himself Ten laws of teaching were discussed in a philosophical manner The doctor then called attention to an outline of school work and elaborated upon it The speaker showed the advantages to be gained from proper punishment of a child The end of all punishment is i reformation Before a teacher punishes a child he should ask himself the question ques-tion What will be the effect of punishing punish-ing the child Is the punishment needed as a warning to others Dr Baldwin a leading educator from Texas was a visitor and addressed the teachers Having finished his labors in Provo he wished to pay his respects to one of Americas greatest educators Dr White who is doing aUoble work in Salt Lake I city He had but a couple of hours to spend in the city and he desired to make theacquaintance of all theteachers in the school He gave a pleasing address in which he illustrated the following educational maxims IBe what you would have your pupils become 2Know thoroughly the subject and the children 3lIse easy words with apt illustrations illustra-tions 4Secure attention through interest 5By each step leadfrom the known to the unknown 6Lead learners to find out to tell and to do for themselves 7Manage to have your pupils study the best things 8 Train learners to associate into unity their acquisitions 9Train pupils to habitually do their best in the best way 10Lead the pupil through right ideas to right conduct Miss Winston drilled the class in some interval exercises and a few songs Miss Winston has a pleasing manner of giving instruction and gives fine models of such tones as she wishes her class to produce Professor Augsburgs address was on colors He showed how the primary colors may be combined to produce secondary He also initiated the gentlemen gentle-men into the mystery of shades and tints The ladies are up in that subject especially in this season of dazzling combinations com-binations Professor Andrews took up the grammar gram-mar period with a lesson on complex sentences sen-tences Hegave drill In abridging them and when he finished the complex sentences sen-tences had grown quite simple Miss Kenyon gave some valuable physical phys-ical exercises among them a walking exercise ex-ercise that was well conducted Among the distinguished visitors at the summer school was Mr H J Huse of the New West Educational commission Dr Whites lecture on the Duty of the Hour at the Odd Fellows hall this evening will be a splendid effort and be should have a full house Dr White has been called the Wendell Phillips of the American platform |
