Show AMUSEMENTS JANE I That sparkling comedy farceJns the programme has it Jane was given at the Salt Lake theatre last night to a good house During the three acts of compli cated trouble the audience kept up a roar of laughter which said much for the play the cast and for Miss Jennie Yea mans who assumed the title role Miss Yeamans played the role in just the way ordinary domestic would appear i i suddenly elevated for the day to the position of shamming the vie of her employer em-ployer The first thing one does in seeing the play is to compare her Jane to the Jane of Johnstpne Bennett In fact Miss Yeamans invites thecomparision by starring in the role made famous by Miss Bennett The creations of the two ladles are entirely different As I said before Miss Yeamans makes the character that of the ordinary domestic Miss Bennett played it just as an extraordinarily clever domestic with a keen eye for the main chance with an intelligence above her station would huv acted under the trying circumstances circum-stances And to my notion Miss Ben netts performance was very much better There was a stately brilliancy in Miss Bennetts Jane that Miss Yeamaus soubrette sou-brette Jane did not possess So much for the comparison In making it and iu naming my preference for Miss Bennett I must not be understood as disparaging Miss Yeamans performance On the contrary she was immensely clever and made her Jane a very amusing Jane who had the sympathy and admiration of the whole house There were many familiar faces from the former cast Alf Fisher as William did not fill the bill as well as his predecessor prede-cessor Adolph Jackson as Charles Shakelton was very good while Joseph Allen as Mr Kershaw teaches us all how to laugh The evening opened with a little curtain cur-tain raiser Chums I which has been presented here before Chums is a pretty little one act comedy in which everything starts out wrong and winds up right which is surely very obliging all in oue act Miss Helen Mortimer who does not appear in the cast of Jane was kindly received The Jane engagement closes with tonights performance This morning at the theatre box office the sale of seats begins for the coal fund benefit The Two Orphans A charity of this kind someway appeals well to the public There is a good deal of satisfaction satisfac-tion in getting ones moneys worth out of the play besides having the comfortable feeling that one is contributing to a most worthy cause Between the acts of The Two Orphans many a man will comfortably reflect that his presence there will perhaps v rh the blue fingers of some deserving one this winter who has sufferedlhe bitter dregs of poverty It is pleasant to know that there is every project promise of a big success for the V WONDERLAND Tomorowis thejastx day to witness the excellent programme which is being presented beingpre sented at this house as a complete change of bill will be made on Thursday Wednesday is regular souvenir day which will no doubt bring out large audiences The Midgets continue to delight de-light the visitors in the Curio hall and a most theatpriuni excellent performance is given in |
