hundred and fifty plates were set in the banqueting ball of the University of Utah last evening and no more brilliant a scene was ever witnessed in the assembly room than when the various graduation classes filed 1 and took their seats at beautifully draped tables decked with flowers and dotted with salmon and lobster salads and the choice slices of ham tongue and turkey with the ot ceteras of pickles viands and olives and a dozen other appetizing 4 juu jiuve uucoruons were lasioiuuy arranged by Mine Host Young of the Tem pleton and there were white yellow and red rose tables and one onwhich the fragrant honeysuckle prevailed Prof W E Weihes orchestra was sta tUrned in the corner and rendered some very inspiring music accompanied by Professor Krouso on tho piano President William 11 Stewart read his address of welcome and briefly reviewed the great work accomplished by the university uni-versity feeling referring to its early I struggles when the professors went dpwn i into their own pockets to help it along in an emergency J L Rawlins was elected Toast Master and he was very felicitous in his introductions introduc-tions Chief Justice Zane was presented as a citizen without reproach and il judge whose ermine was spotless as the snow The chief justice spoke to the toast Tho Relation of the State to Higher Education Educa-tion and in a lucid and logical way argued up to conclusion that the schoolhouse school-house and universitj do more to protect lrotect Buuiuiry muu UIIUIIUUL courts policemen and the penitentiary The great object of education is to fit the rising generation for the duties of life A great nation must possess intelligence in a high degree she must possess moral power ana this is attained Education in the colleges and universities as well as common schools These universities are the light of the world It is said that the world is governed gov-erned by public opinion and it is esaentail that this public opinion should be enlightened enlight-ened byhigher education Tho toast master introduced Dr Orson Howard The doctor breathed in his address ad-dress the refinements of poetic literature and that it vas essential to bring the spirit of man in accord with the spirit of things and that Shakespeare Keats and Wordsworth Words-worth welt deeper into the heart of nature than the higher mathematics Professor Kingsbury was presented as a toiler who reflected the true light of tho university and as his address was adopted without a dissenting vote as representing the sentiment of the Alma Mater in its position po-sition towards the university the address is given below in fulL Prof Paul on behalf of tho committee read tha following resolution on the retirement retire-ment of Dr Park which was adopted with many demonstrations of applause HESOLOTION TO DR PARK Whereas I has seemed best to our beloved friend and teacher Dr John R Park that after twentythreo years o honorable service as president or the university he will now sever his official connection with institution which in the past has been almost identical with his name and labors and Whereas In tho resignation of Dr Park the cause or higher education in our midst will lose a gentleman and scholar while future students will not enjoy his loving sympathy and genial Interest in their welfare now therefore be it Resolved That the members of the Alumni association of the Univeisity of Utah do hereby extend to Dr Park our warmest expressions of esteem confidence and friendship that we wish him every joy of health every pleasure of thought from old time memories increasing en jojment from present reposo and the serene anticipation of faith for the glorious future In store for those who have spent tho best years ot their lives in the reply said he had labored long to make the graduates grad-uates of the university noble men and women wo-men He was repaid by the constant es hand paessions of gratitude ho heard on every I handThere There is a toast on tho programme of the most interesting nature said Toastmaster Toast-master Rowlins Our Lady Graduates and the gentleman Mr E M Allison jr who was to respon o it feels unable to I cope with the question and 1 am not in position to express these delicate thoughts unreservedly What would this alumni be without tne ladles what would society bewhat would the state bet We can speak of tho lady graduates gradu-ates that they occupy R sphere equal i not above the graduates The toasts over the guests repaired to the ballroom and tho dance was kept up until a late hour The ladies
