Show THE PLATJfOIiSI COMMITTEE Silver ITqn Apparently Satisfied With the Planks They Got MINNEAPOLIS Juno SThe chief difficulties diffi-culties confronting the convention in the matter of platform was solved this afternoon after-noon There was a lively time preceding the solution Sliver was the rock upon which the committee nearly split with the result dIscord and majority reports to the convention When the platform committee com-mittee assembled this afternoon no reconciliation recon-ciliation had been effected in tho subcorn mittee appointed Chairman Forakor considered con-sidered the silver problem the first matter coming tfeforo the full convention Tariff and silver was advocated doggedly from the set out of the contest on every inch oft of-t e ground and embarrass the opponents at every stage of the consideration of the platform The BOLD TACTICS PROVED SUCCESSFUL for at 430 when the platform committee took a recess the victory was woir Instead In-stead of a free coinage platform separate and distinct they so shaped the tariff paragraph in accordance with what is supposed sup-posed to be the hearts desire of the so called oilvcr states Free coinage was lot t go by the board and instead the silver men gleefully accepted tim clause pledging tho Republican party to tho policy of u PROTECTIVE TARIFF ON LEAD After the decision the reports of the subcommittees sub-committees on miscellaneous subject wore received The committee dealt with tho Nicaragua canal nnd reported a plank recognizing tho Nicaragua canal as of transcendent imporacea to the United 0 States in view of Its necessity in the I time of war and the great utility in forwarding the interests of the American productions of commerce and recOmmending that all proper steps betaken be-taken to procure its building by American capital The two planks aro already completed com-pleted and placed in the hands of a revision committee composed of Gore of Nebraska Platt of Connecticut Teller of Colorado Brachett of Massachusetts and Thompson of Minnesota A recess was taken till S oclock and upon reassembling the silver men were apparently satisfied and stuck to the previous pre-vious declaration that with load taken care of the silver states could be carried by the Republicans but as soon as tbe committee was fairly under way discussing what should be tho second plank in the platform the silver men I TROTTED OUT THEE SILVER as fresh as ever Another hot fight ensued I en-sued and the second victory resulted for the silver men though as before not what I they aimed at The New York and New I England committeemen proved far too strong to get anything like a fiatfooted I declaration for unlimited coinage or anything any-thing similarly radical The upshot was an agreement that the I second plank should deal with tho silver question The compromise as to the language lan-guage was that the declaration should be substantially as follows I The American people by tradition nnd interest are in favor of btmetallic coinage of gold and silver one dollar should be as good as another dollar that silver should be coined at a ratio to be fixed by legislation legisla-tion and the forthcoming international conference con-ference endorsed as probably furnishing a satisfactory questions solution of the vexed financial Questons I THE SILVER PLANK The following is tho silver plank of the platform to be submitted to the convention tomorrow The American people through interest and tradition are in favor of bimotulism and demand that both metals shall be used as the standard ot money under such regulations regu-lations and provisions as may be established estab-lished by the legislative department of the government establish and maintain a parity of metals and make each dollar whether of gold silver or paper the equal of any other dollar We commend the wise and patriotic policy inaugurated of calling an international conference to establish es-tablish the concurrent use of gold and silver sil-ver throughont the commercial vulat |
