Show A RIOT AVERTED Hot Headed Factions Tear Up Each Others Banners MINNEAPOLIS Juno STho white wings of harmony which fluttered over tho convention today were put to flight in a tumultous scono of disorder at the West hotel tonight Lato this afternoon it was announced by the younger men by Blaine banners and other insignia of the plumed knight headed by the bands of the various cities The Harrison people heard of the programme and although the managers did cot advise a counterdemon stration the younger element determined that the president and the cause should not be entirely lost from sight in the hilarious hilari-ous Blaine demonstration Both factions turned outand marched through the streets I > I and finally both headed for the hotel There they met and marched around in circles to thtune off of-f DISCORDANT TELLS and rival shouts for Blaine and Harrison At the head of the Blaine column was a banner carried by an Indiana man bearing the inscription I Blaine is nominated he will carry Indiana by 10000 Another Blaine man carried a similar banner bearing bear-ing a still more irritating inscription I Harrison is nominated he will lose Indiana I by 20000 The banners excited tho ire of the 1re young HarrIson men of Indiana and n rush was made Before the Blaine people had an opportunity to defend their colors tho two BANNERS WERE TORN DOWN AND POLLED TO PIECES instantly the Blaino people retaliated by Inn I-nn onslaught on the Harrison forces and the banners bearing the portrait of the president and inscriptions certifying his political grandeur were also pulled down and torn to pieces and trampled underfoot under-foot This of course provoked bad feeling and fo1 be time it seemed as though there would A GENERAL TIGHT There was considerable scuffling and men jostle i against marble walls and two or three fistic encounters of short duration but the riot which for a time was threatened threat-ened was happily averted For two hours tho hotheaded rival factions fac-tions thronged the hotel rotunda and made it impossible for guests to pass but shortly after ten oclock they dispersed without personal damage to anybody but after having created a great Ieal of discord in the ranks of the Republican part particularly par-ticularly of the rival factions of the Hoosior state |
