| Show The Coal Question The movement started by Mayor BASKIX and backed by several members of the city council and other men of Influence and capital in this city has already become very popular The action taken by the coal dealers was not likely to be viewed with equanimity by the public They need not blame the newopapera for the feeling which has been aroused over the coal swindles swin-dles that have been endured for some time because there was no apparent remedy THE HERALD has but voiced the sentiment of tho consumers Unless the dealers come down from their high horse and pay some attention to the public demand they will find themselves thrown sky high or tumbled off into the coal dust THE HLIIALD is of the opinion that tho dealers will find it to their interest to study the public welfare a little more to aid in the enforcement of the city ordinance instead in-stead of obstructing it and to help in furnishing fur-nishing consumers with genuine coal at reasonable ratts and honest weight By this means they will perhaps retain a I profitable business and have the good will of the community neither of which is to be I despised A railroad to the Coalvillo mines is no wild scheme nor is it likely to prove greatly expensive as railroads go If active measures are taken it can be made almost immediately practical and will bring down the price of coal at least one fourth The coal companies may try to run out the new scheme by dropping the prices BO low as to make it impossible But that wills only prove selfruinous In the sequel se-quel and the coal buyers will have their day of harvest and can afford to smile and look on while the competition continues Good coal free from slack and wall dirt ought to bo supplied for four dollars for two thousands pounds in this city and it will be if the companies and dealers monkey too much with the necessities of the people Better be reasonable and do something like the square thing |
