Show I I BADLY SHAKEN UP The Union Pacific Train Derailed De-railed Near Hanauer One Hundred Passengers Aboard and Not One InjuredAn Open SwItch the Cause Through a tattle Guard The Union Pacific train duo In Salt Lake at 610 last evening was derailed a short distance this side of the Hanauer smelter and had not been replaced on tho rails at an early hour this morning As is usual when such things occur particulars par-ticulars are meagre those who know the most about the wreck refusing to talk The train was bounding along at the rate of about twentyfive miles per hour and had just crossed the high trestle near the Hanauer smelter when the passengers felt a sudden jar and then a sensation of being rapidly driven over a pile of logs Finally the train was stopped and in tnree seconds afterwards 100 people on the train with blpnched faces and almost paralyzed tongues were inquiring the causo 911 was then learned that a switch had been left open by some section bands who had just quit work for the day On toe switch some distance ahead were standing stand-ing several loaded cars As soon as the engineer saw the open switch he threw on the air brakes This slowed up the train but at the same time threw from the rails the engine and tender tho baggage car and the smoker All these went bumping over the rails for fully 100 yards ere the train was brought to a standstill the tender of the engine finally falling through a cattlo guard The nreman jumped from tho engine but the engineer remained at his post and when ho was approached ap-proached by the passengers who wanted to compliment him on the nerve and bravery he displayed he waved them all aside say lug I only did what I am paid for As soon as I saw the switch was open I gave her nIl the air 1 had but when I did that jve left the track and its a mercy we are not a bit worse off than we areA I are-A large number of passengers walked i over to Murray and came to Salt Lake on the Rapid Transit A wrecking train was at once sent to the scene of the accident but it will probably be 4 or 5 oclock this morning before the wreck is removed The cars and engino were not BO badly damaged as at first supposed sup-posed and none of tho passengers were injured in-jured even by a bruise The watchfulness of the engineer undoubtedly un-doubtedly saved a collision which would have been attended with great loss of life and property |
