Show CYCLONE AT SiiA Rough Voyage o the French Steamer In Tourane NEW YORK Oot 22Passengers of the French steamer La Tourane which got in today are glad to got ashore For nearly two days they wore imprisoned below decks while the vessel tossed up and down hither and thither by a general cyclone Wednesday there came fronrthe south a weird roaring whistle that told of the approach ap-proach of a cyclone The Captain got the ships nose to the southward to receive tho blow head on and she ploughed at full speed when tae roar of the storm struck her The first shock of the wind came upon the port bow The wind seemed to come from every direction at once and tho masts quivered the vessels head swuqg unsteadily to the starboard and then back The captain saw the vessel had encountered encoun-tered the edge of a cyclone He ordered her speed reduced again and again until the indicator showed only eight knots Toward midnight the storm turned the ship a out or nearly so She got back speedily into the wind but had to fight for it J At 3 ocloclr tho storm began to abate and by 4 oclock she resumed her course At 4 oclock Thursday afternoon a furious wind though not so strong Is the night before be-fore struck the vessel full in the bows The vessel pitched forward into the storm and for eleven hours until 1 oclock Friday morning passed throucb almost the same trials as the night before Tno waves poured over her bows and at times splashed nearly aa high as tho too of the omokeatack but the captain feared thorn less than those that crossed the vessels quarters the night before Toward To-ward midnight the storm abated and at 1 ocluck the next morning all was over |
